Today features the starting pitcher debuts by Ted Trent, Webster McDonald, Willie Powell, and John Donaldson.

Detroit beat Birmingham 6-1. Hilton Smith was dominant, allowing 2 hits and 1 run in 8 innings to improve to 6-2. Ted Trent took the loss in his debut. Trent pitched well, but things fell apart in a 4-run 7th inning. For Detroit, Willie Mays had 2 hits and 2 RBI. Wild Bill Wright had 2 hits, and Sam Bankhead, George Brett, and Mule Suttles added RBIs. Carlton Fisk’s solo homer was one of Birmingham’s two hits.

John Donaldson led Washington to a 13-1 win over first place St. Louis. In his debut as a starting pitcher, Donaldson went the distance allowing only 1 run despite allowing 15 base runners. The offense was led by Duke Snider (4 hits, 3 RBI), Billy Hamilton (4 hits, 4 RBI), Rev Parnell (2 hits, 3 RBI), and Wade Boggs (3 hits, 3 runs). Buck O’Neil added an RBI for the victors. Leon Day took the loss, allowing 11 runs in 3+ innings. Heavy Johnson and Willard Brown each had 2 hits in the loss.

Today’s Player Focus post is on Hank Aaron, who played shortstop in the Negro Leagues in 1952. Day 44 seems like the perfect day to honor Hammerin’ Hank!

Webster McDonald(2-2), with relief help from Dazzy Vance, shut down the New York Black Yankees hitters at the ballpark. The Kansas City Monarchs came away with a 5 to 0 victory.
McDonald pitched a fine game. He went 8 innings surrendering 6 hits and 6 walks lowering his ERA to 1.88. Kansas City finished with 12 hits while New York ended up with 6.
Bullet Joe Rogan(4-4) was the losing pitcher. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 12 hits and 4 walks in 8 innings.

Slim Jones allowed Pittsburgh’s manager to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game at Greenlee Field as the Pittsburgh Crawfords beat the Newark Eagles by the count of 7 to 1.
Newark was unable to recover after Pittsburgh went ahead in the 2nd inning scoring one runner. Pittsburgh had 12 hits for the afternoon.
Jones(5-4) allowed 1 run on the game. Willie Powell(1-1) took the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 9 hits and 4 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.
With the win Pittsburgh now has a record of 23-21. With this loss, Newark has a 5-5 record of late, 21-23 overall.

Hamilton had a big day at the plate. He delivered a base-hit in the 1st inning, hit a single bringing home two baserunners in the 3rd inning, delivered a solo blast in the 6th inning and ripped a one-base hit in the 8th inning. Washington totaled 17 hits on the afternoon.
