Day 45

Week 12 of 28 in the Buck O’Neil project begins today.

Newark shut out Birmingham, 6-0. Walter Johnson threw a complete game 3-hitter. Sammy T. Hughes had 2 RBI and Jerry Benjamin added 2 hits. Dick Seay, Roberto Clemente, and Larry Doby had Birmingham’s 3 hits. Babe Ruth went 0-4, and Josh Gibson went 0-3 with a walk.

The powerful Detroit offense was back, beating Pittsburgh 10-3. Ralph Kiner hit 2 homers, upping his league leading season total to 11. Cal Ripken also had 2 home runs. Cool Papa Bell, Dewey Creacy, Alex Radcliffe, and Double Duty Radcliffe each had 2 hits for Detroit. Mel Ott and Jimmie Foxx each hit a solo home run for Pittsburgh, and Rev Cannady had 2 hits in the loss.

St. Louis edged Kansas City, 5-4. TJ Young went 3-5 with 3 RBI, finishing a home run short of the cycle. Oscar Charleston and Frank Warfield each had 2 hits for St. Louis, and Frank Robinson hit a solo home run. Frank Thomas went 3-5 for Kansas City, missing a cycle by a double. Tubby Scales had 2 RBI in the loss, and Ghost Marcelle added 2 hits and an RBI.

New York won a classic pitcher’s duel over Washington, 2-1. Ed Walsh went 7-1/3 innings to improve his record to 7-3. Addie Joss took the loss, giving up a 2-run home run to Louis Santop for the only New York runs. Pete Hill went 1-2 with a walk and a stolen base. Washington had 10 hits, including 2 each for Hank Aaron, Willie Stargell, Frank Duncan, and Al Simmons.

Walter Johnson took a no-hitter into the 6th inning as the Newark Eagles topped the Birmingham Black Barons by a score of 6 to 0 at the ballpark.
Johnson(5-7) was tremendous on the mound for Newark. He gave up just 3 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 3.15 to 2.87. The right-handed Johnson lost a no-hitter when Dick Seay singled with one out in the 6th inning. Newark finished with 11 hits in the victory.
Amos Rusie(3-5) was hit with the loss. He surrendered 11 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings.

PITTSBURGH AT DETROIT

Ralph Kiner rocketed 2 homeruns and had 6 RBI and Pete Alexander tossed a complete game as the Detroit Stars defeated the Pittsburgh Crawfords 10 to 3 at Mack Park.
Kiner was a one-man wrecking crew. He lofted a three-run bomb in the 3rd inning and lost the ball over the fence for three runs in the 5th inning. Detroit banged out 13 hits on the afternoon.
Alexander(9-2) lasted until the end allowing 3 runs for the win. Greg Maddux(7-4) was the losing pitcher. He served up 3 gopher balls in 4 innings.

Catcher T.J. Young collected 2 extra-base hits and had 3 RBI at Muehlebach Field as the St. Louis Stars beat the Kansas City Monarchs by the count of 6 to 5.
St. Louis came up with 3 runs in the top of the 4th inning when they had 3 base hits. Judy Johnson got things going when he tripled. Bernardo Baro followed next and he hit a deep fly which scored a run. After another out, Joe Cronin then drew a walk. Young was up next and he doubled bringing in another run. Lou Gehrig stepped into the box and stroked a single scoring the final run of the inning. Kansas City tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.
The victory was credited to Rube Waddell(2-0) who went 6 and 2/3 innings, allowing 4 runs. Dennis Eckersley recorded the save, his 6th. Tom Seaver(0-2) was the loser. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 12 hits and 5 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings.
‘I had a little blister on my index finger before the game, but I thought it was nothing.’ Waddell said. ‘I was lucky I got a win because I couldn’t put the ball where I wanted it.’

WASHINGTON AT NEW YORK

Ed Walsh(7-3) and Addie Joss(1-3) treated the New York fans to a fine pitching duel at the ballpark. The New York Black Yankees eventually emerged as victors over the Washington Homestead Grays by the score of 2 to 1.
In the 2nd inning New York scored 2 runs with the help of 3 hits. That was all Walsh needed. Washington made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
Rollie Fingers earned his 12th save. Washington’s manager was subdued after the ballgame, ‘That one really hurts. If our guys had simply played more fundamentally sound, we could have won that one. That is what really ticks me off!’
