Today’s match ups featured the road team’s B lineup versus the home team’s A lineup. Three of the four games were blowouts. Newark lost its 6th game, and league leader New York dropped its second game of the season.
Pedro Martinez turned in another gem, throwing a complete game, 2-hit shutout.
My favorite game was Washington’s 3-2 victory over New York. Buck O’Neil drove home Home Run Johnson with the first run in the top of the 3rd inning, and Johnson drove home the second run in the 5th inning and scored the eventual game winning run. Johnson went 2-3 with a walk.
For Pittsbugh, Jackie Robinson went 4-5 with a home run, but so did his teammate Ben Taylor. Taylor added 3 RBI. Today’s Player Focus post is on Ben Taylor, an outstanding first baseman from a prolific baseball family.

Pittsburgh started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of the first as they scored 2 runs on 2 base hits. The big moment was provided by Mickey Cochrane who silenced Mack Park as he ripped a base-hit plating two runs. The Pittsburgh offense poured it on, scoring in 7 of the 9 innings.
Palmer(1-1) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 3 runs. Juan Marichal(1-1) was charged with the loss. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 4 and 2/3 innings of work.

Joe Dimaggio had 4 hits and 5 RBI and Pedro Martinez blanked Kansas City allowing just 2 hits at Muehlebach Field as the St. Louis Stars beat the Kansas City Monarchs by the count of 8 to 0.
Dimaggio really lit it up for St. Louis. The Kansas City fans let him have it for what he did to their boys. He smashed a two-run homer in the 1st inning, singled in the 3rd inning, stroked a base-hit which scored a run in the 4th inning and doubled bringing in two baserunners in the 6th inning. St. Louis banged out 16 hits on the afternoon.
Martinez(2-0) was credited with the shutout, his first of the year. Old Hoss Radbourn(0-1) suffered the loss. He couldn’t find the plate, issuing 8 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.
‘When Martinez is on like that it is a tough game to play, no doubt about it,’ Kansas City’s manager said. ‘He always pitches well against us.’

The victory went to Cy Young(2-0) who went 7 and 2/3 innings, allowing 2 runs. Young got help from Hoyt Wilhelm who earned his 2nd save. Sandy Koufax(1-1) was hit with the loss.
