April 19 – Day 8

Today’s match ups featured each team’s B lineup. Three of the four games were blowouts. Newark lost its 7th game, losing 8-7 to Birmingham in a game that was not as close as it sounded. Pop Lloyd went 3-4 with 3 RBI for the Eagles, while Hurley McNair led the Black Barons with a 3-5 day, adding an RBI and a run scored.
St. Louis beat Kansas City 4-2. Willard Brown led the way with a 3-4 day at the plate. The 3-run fourth inning was enough scoring to secure the victory behind Leon Day on the mound.
Detroit out slugged Pittsburgh 17-10 and Mule Suttles (1b) had a banner day: 3 for 4 with 2 home runs, 5 RBI, 3 runs scored, and 2 walks. On most days that would be enough to be the Player Focus, but …
Bullet Joe Rogan pitched a complete game 1-hit shutout, leading New York to a 4-0 win over Washington. Rogan did not give up a hit until the 8th inning, and immediately induced a double play. Today’s Player Focus post is on Bullet Joe Rogan, an outstanding pitcher who also swung a big bat.

Suttles enjoyed a great day at the plate. He ripped a solo home run in the 4th inning, ripped a base-knock which brought home a run in the 6th inning and launched a three-run homer in the 7th inning. Detroit bats were very productive in the 1st inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 4 hits and the 7th inning with 4 runs on 5 hits. Due to a poorly pitched ballgame, scoring in 5 different innings was still not enough for Pittsburgh to come away with the victory.
The win went to Hilton Smith(1-1) who allowed 7 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings. The losing pitcher was Roosevelt Davis(0-1) in relief. He surrendered 3 runs and 6 hits in 3 and 1/3 innings.
Suttles was in a good mood after the game, ‘I’m just seeing and hitting the ball real well now. I made some adjustments last week and they are paying off. That’s what this game is about. making adjustments as the season goes along.’
