May 2 – Day 15

Three blowouts, two shutouts, and one close game on Day 15.
St. Louis beat Birmingham 7-0, thanks to 8 shutout innings and 10 strikeouts from Pedro Martinez. Oscar Heavy Johnson had 2 hits and 2 RBI, and Tank Carr added 4 hits.
Detroit was dominated by Washington 13-0. Cy Young improved to 4-0 with a complete game shutout, and Chino Smith had 3 hits, 1 home run, 3 runs scored, and 3 RBI.
Newark made it three in a row over Kansas City, 9-4. Tubby Scales gave Kansas City a 3-2 lead with his bases-loaded triple in the sixth inning, but they could not hold on. Pop Lloyd had 2 hits and 3 RBI for Newark.
Pittsburgh slipped past New York 5-3, thanks to a 2-run rally in the 8th inning. Ben Taylor doubled home the first of those runs, and Jimmie Crutchfield drove in the second with a sacrifice fly. Crutchfield ended the day with 3 RBI. Jim Palmer went the distance for the win and Sandy Koufax took the complete-game loss. Newt Joseph hit a 2-run homer for the losers.
Today’s Player Focus post is on Charles “Chino” Smith, one of the greatest hitters in the Negro Leagues who died early at age 30 of yellow fever.

Right fielder Oscar Heavy Johnson had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Pedro Martinez racked up an impressive total of 10 strikeouts as the St. Louis Stars bested the Birmingham Black Barons 7 to 0 at the ballpark.
Martinez(3-1) simply dominated Birmingham. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 5 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings dropping his ERA from 3.75 to 2.81. For the game St. Louis out-hit Birmingham 11 to 5.
Gaylord Perry(1-2) was the losing pitcher. Martinez, when asked about his 10 strikeout performance noted, ‘The important thing is that we won, if I get 20 and we lose, what good does it do our team? But, on the other hand, since we won it feels great!’

Cy Young shutout Detroit while allowing the Washington bullpen a day-off and Chino Smith hit a homerun and had 3 RBI at Mack Park as the Washington Homestead Grays embarrassed the Detroit Stars by the lopsided score of 13 to 0.
Smith had a big day against Detroit. He doubled scoring two baserunners in the 4th inning, lofted a solo-blast ‘downtown’ in the 7th inning and stroked a one-base hit in the 9th inning. Washington managed 13 hits in their victory.
Young(4-0) was credited with the shutout, his first of the year. Juan Marichal(2-2) took the loss. Washington scored big getting 5 runs off him in 3 and 2/3 innings.
The Washington ballclub’s record now stands at 8-7. With the loss Detroit now has a record of 8-7.

The Newark Eagles tallied 4 runs in the 8th inning and had an easy time of it at Muehlebach Field defeating the Kansas City Monarchs by a score of 9 to 4.
Warren Spahn(1-2) pitched a solid game. He was reached for 4 hits and 1 walk in 6 innings. Newark ended up with 12 hits for the game while Kansas City had 6.
Phil Cockrell recorded his 1st save. Webster McDonald(1-2) ended up with the loss in relief. He pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing no hits and 1 walk.

Jim Palmer pitched a complete game and Paul Molitor had 2 base hits at the ballpark where the Pittsburgh Crawfords beat the New York Black Yankees by the score of 5 to 3.
Palmer(2-1) pitched well for Pittsburgh in their victory. He went 9 innings allowing 6 hits and 7 walks and surrendered 2 ’round-trippers’. Pittsburgh had 8 hits for the afternoon.
Sandy Koufax(1-2) was given the loss. ‘I struggled a bit out there today,’ Palmer said, ‘but I toughed it out and we got the win.’
