Dobie Moore was an outstanding defensive shortstop and hitter who played his entire career for the Kansas City Monarchs.

“Dobie may not have been as agile as some of them (other shortstops), but he had a rifle arm and made good plays.”

George Sweatt (teammate)

Moore was 5’11” and weighed 230 pounds, a natural athlete. He played for the Monarchs from 1920-1926. His best season was probably in 1924 – he hit .453, slugged .694, hit 10 home runs, and led the league in doubles. The Monarchs beat Hilldale in the first World Series that season. He was considered an up-and-coming challenger to Pop Lloyd as the best Negro Leagues shortstop.

Dobie Moore’s career was cut short due to a shooting incident in 1926. There are many stories floating around about the incident when he was shot by Elsie Brown. After Brown shot him in the leg, Moore jumped off a terrace while trying to escape and shattered the bones in his wounded leg.
