Day 20 – May 10

Ending the week with 4 close games. I’m posting this one a day early so I can take Mother’s Day off – enjoy your day Moms!


Detroit beat Newark 6-3 in 12 innings. Kirby Puckett hit a 2-run home run in the 12th inning, and Willie Mays singled home Sam Bankhead for an insurance run. Bankhead had 2 hits in the win. Pop Lloyd had a solo home run in the loss.

Pittsburgh beat Birmingham 7-6 on a Dobie Moore RBI double in the bottom of the 8th. Birmingham had just tied up the game at 6-6 in the top of that inning when Larry Brown singled in 2 runs. Slim Jones struck out 10 Black Barons, Jackie Robinson scored 3 runs, and Jimmie Crutchfield scored 2 more. Mickey Mantle went 3-3 with a home run and 2 walks in the loss.

St. Louis moved back into a tie with New York after a 7-6 win. Joe DiMaggio drove home the winning run with a bases loaded single in the bottom of the 9th. Willard Brown had a bases loaded triple for St. Louis. Jimmie Lyons had 2 hits and 2 RBI for New York.

A 7 run rally came up just short for Kansas City, as they fell 11-9 to Washington. Andy Cooper picked up his second win with a solid 7-1/3 inning outing. Wade Boggs was 4-5 with 2 RBI and Chino Smith added 2 hits and an RBI. Duke Snider hit his first home run of the year. Rap Dixon went 3-5 and scored 2 runs for Kansas City.

Today’s Player Focus post is on the Kansas City Monarchs’ shortstop Dobie Moore. An excellent offensive and defensive player, Moore’s career was cut short in a shooting incident.

The Detroit Stars bested the Newark Eagles in 12 innings by a 6 to 3 score at the ballpark.
The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings. Detroit won the hard fought contest in the 12th inning. Bobby Doerr started the inning off right when he delivered a single. Vic Harris came to the plate and laid down a sacrifice bunt. Kirby Puckett then smashed a two-run homer. Sam Bankhead followed next and he doubled. After another out, Willie Mays came to bat and laced a base-hit scoring the final run of the inning. Detroit had 11 hits for the afternoon.
The win went to Don Drysdale(1-0) who allowed no runs in 2 and 1/3 innings. Drysdale got relief help from Phil Niekro who gained credit for his 1st save. Sam Streeter(0-2) was hit with the loss in relief. Detroit knocked him around a bit, as he gave up 4 runs in 3 and 1/3 innings.

Slim Jones struck out 10 batters as the Pittsburgh Crawfords defeated the Birmingham Black Barons by a score of 7 to 6 at Greenlee Field.
Jones(2-1) pitched a fine game. He was reached for 9 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings. Both teams ended up with 9 hits on the afternoon.
Harry Salmon(0-2) was the losing pitcher. ‘Everything felt great’ Jones said. ‘I had a good fastball, I felt I could throw it by everybody today.’

Joe Dimaggio had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the St. Louis Stars won a heart-stopping victory over the New York Black Yankees, 7 to 6.
St. Louis won the game with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. After an out was recorded, Eddie Collins slapped a single. After another out, Tank Carr came to the plate and drew a walk. Carr then stole second base. Oscar Heavy Johnson followed and he was walked intentionally. Dimaggio came to the plate and banged out a single resulting in a mighty exciting win for St. Louis and the 47,758 home town fans in attendance. Neither team was able to score until the 6th inning.
Nip Winters(1-0) got the win allowing 1 run in 1/3 of an inning. Red Faber(0-1) took the loss in relief. He surrendered 2 hits and 2 walks in 2 innings.

Billy Hamilton touched them all and had 3 RBI as the Washington Homestead Grays topped the Kansas City Monarchs by a score of 11 to 9 at Griffith Stadium.
Washington wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning scoring 4 runners on 4 hits. The biggest moment was provided by Hamilton who brought a roar from the partisan Griffith Stadium fans when he launched a three-run homer. Kansas City tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.
The victory was credited to Andy Cooper(2-2) who went 7 and 1/3 innings, allowing 4 runs. Bill Drake(0-3) was given the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 11 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings.
