Day 23 – May 16

Kansas City beat Newark 7-3. Old Hoss Radburn picked up his second win, giving up 2 runs in 6 innings. Tris Speaker went 4-4 for Kansas City, and Fats Jenkins added 2 RBI. Buck Ewing and Sammy T. Jones each had 2 hits and an RBI for Newark.

New York won a dramatic game at Pittsburgh, 8-4, scoring 7 unearned runs in the top of the 9th inning. Jim Palmer had given up only 1 hit in the first 8 innings. He gave up a 1-out double in the 9th, and after striking out the next batter he walked the bases loaded. John Smoltz got a fly ball from Hack Wilson, but a Neil Robinson error allowed 2 unearned runs to score. Charles Blackwell singled in 2 more runs, and after an intentional walk Willie Wells hit a 3-run bomb. Spoony Palm and Rickey Henderson both homered for Pittsburgh. Sandy Koufax took a no-hitter into the 6th inning.

St. Louis blanked Birmingham 6-0. Pedro Martinez was masterful, throwing 8 shutout innings to pick up the win. Frank Robinson had 2 hits and 3 RBI, Oscar Charleston scored 2 runs and drove in 1, and Lou Gehrig had 3 hits to raise his average to .213. Birmingham only managed 6 hits, with Martin Dihigo and Newt Allen each getting 2 hits.

Washington edged Detroit 3-2. Cy Young picked up his 5th win with support from Turkey Stearnes (2 hirs, 1 run scored, 1 RBI). Ray Dandridge and Bingo Demoss drove in the other 2 runs. Juan Marichal was a hard-luck loser, going the distance and only giving up 3 runs. Willie Mays and Wild Bill Wright each had 2 hits in the loss.

Today’s Player Focus post is on Fats Jenkins, a speedy outfielder who was a two-sport star.

Old Hoss Radbourn(2-1) earned his pay with a solid performance for Kansas City. He was reached for 6 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings lowering his ERA to 4.38. Overall Kansas City out-hit Newark 11 to 8.
Lee Smith recorded his 4th save. Warren Spahn(1-3) was the loser. He allowed 4 runs and 7 hits in 6 and 1/3 innings.

Sandy Koufax took a no-hitter into the 6th inning as the New York Black Yankees rallied impressively to win in dramatic style over Pittsburgh Crawfords, 8 to 5.
New York put a big number on the board in the 9th inning, which proved too much for Pittsburgh to overcome showing no mercy on Pittsburgh as they plated 7 runs on 3 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Willie Wells who silenced the stadium when he lofted a three-run bomb. Pittsburgh had 7 hits in the game while New York had 4, but New York had the more timely hits.
The victory was credited to Koufax(2-3) who went 8 innings, allowing 3 runs. The left-handed Koufax lost his no-hit bid when Bill Monroe tripled with nobody out in the 6th inning. Jim Palmer(2-2) was given the loss.
Pittsburgh’s manager was not very talkative after his team’s tough loss. ‘I’m not in the mood for questions, but I’m sure New York’s manager will be glad to talk about the game as long as you have questions to ask.’

Frank Robinson had 2 base hits and 3 RBI as the St. Louis Stars defeated the struggling Birmingham Black Barons by a score of 6 to 0 at the ballpark.
St. Louis scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning when they had 4 base hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Pedro Martinez(5-1) and St. Louis. That was all the run support Martinez required. St. Louis had 10 hits for the game and Birmingham had 6.
Gaylord Perry(1-3) ended up with the loss. He pitched 8 innings and surrendered 10 hits and 3 walks.
