Day 29 – May 28

Week 8 of the Buck O’Neil Project begins today.
Kansas City beat Birmingham, 5-2. Johnny Mize delivered a big blow with a 3-run triple in the third inning. Quincy Trouppe had 2 hits, and Ghost Marcelle scored a run and drove one in. Josh Gibson went hitless but drove in a run with a sacrifice fly for Birmingham, and Babe Ruth went 1-1 with 3 walks.

Detroit beat New York in dramatic fashion, 5-4, on a solo home run by Double Duty Radcliffe with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th. Radcliffe ended the day with 3 hits and scored 2 runs. Alex Radcliffe also had a hit in the win, and Al Kaline hit his 5th home run of the season. Pete Hill and Louis Santop each drove in a run for New York, and Eddie Murray went 3-3 with a walk. Pete Alexander picked up his 7th win of the season.

St. Louis dominated Newark, 7-1. Christy Matthewson went the distance to pick up the win. His battery mate, TJ Young, had a huge day at the plate going 3-5 with a solo homer and 3 runs scored. Judy Johnson added an RBI for St. Louis. Newark struggled on offense, but Jerry Benjamin managed to get 2 hits and score the Eagles’ lone run.

Pittsburgh exploded for 5 runs in the 3rd inning and rode that to a 5-3 win over Washington. Mel Ott had a big day going 3-4 with 3 RBI and a home run. Neil Robinson had 2 hits for Pittsburgh, and Jim Rice and Rickey Henderson each homered. Ray Dandridge had 2 hits in the loss.

Today’s Player Focus post is on TJ Young, a left-handed hitting catcher who primarily played with the Kansas City Monarchs.

Johnny Mize had 2 base hits and 3 RBI as the Kansas City Monarchs beat the Birmingham Black Barons by a score of 5 to 2.
Birmingham was unable to climb back into it after Kansas City went ahead for good in the 2nd inning plating an isolated run. Birmingham was out-hit by Kansas City, 10 hits to 6.
Bob Feller(3-4) went 7 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Lee Smith recorded his 7th save. The loss was charged to Amos Rusie(3-2). He gave up 10 hits and 6 walks in 8 innings.

Pete Alexander allowed Detroit’s manager to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game as the Detroit Stars won at Mack Park in dramatic fashion over the New York Black Yankees, the final score, 5 to 4.
The game was won by Detroit with a run in the 9th inning. After two were out Double Duty Radcliffe clubbed a solo home run giving Detroit the victory as 48,671 happy fans celebrated wildly. Detroit had a total of 10 hits for the game.
Alexander(7-1) got the victory, allowing 4 runs for the game. Ed Walsh(4-2) was the losing pitcher. In another of a string of victories, Detroit extended their winning streak to 6 games. ‘We’ve really come alive lately,’ Detroit’s manager said. ‘We won some tough games and I feel real good about this ballclub right now, and hopefully we’ll continue the roll we’re on.’

Christy Mathewson had a complete game at the ballpark as the St. Louis Stars beat the Newark Eagles 7 to 1.
The game started off with St. Louis taking the lead in the first plating one baserunner. St. Louis finished with 8 hits in the victory.
Mathewson(2-4) was the winner allowing 1 run for the game. Walter Johnson(3-5) was charged with the loss. He pitched 9 innings allowing 8 hits and 6 walks.

Mel Ott slammed a homerun and had 3 RBI as the Pittsburgh Crawfords defeated the Washington Homestead Grays by the score of 5 to 3 at Greenlee Field.
Washington surrendered all of the runs Pittsburgh needed in the 3rd inning as they scored 5 runs on 4 base hits. That early run support was enough for Greg Maddux(4-3) and Pittsburgh. Washington had 12 hits in the game while Pittsburgh had 9, but Pittsburgh had the more timely hits.
Eppa Rixey preserved the game for Maddux, recording his his 1st save. Robin Roberts(0-5) suffered the loss. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 2 and 2/3 innings of work.
