Day 35

Newark beat Detroit 6-3, thanks to a 3-run rally in the bottom of the 8th. Ernie Banks got things started with a triple, and he scored on a Hank Greenberg single. John Beckwith, who had 2 hits and an RBI, also scored on a Buck Ewing single. Wild Bill Wright had a hit and an RBI for Detroit, keeping his season average at .413. Carl Hubbell picked up the win in relief after blowing a save, and Juan Marichal went the distance to take the loss.

Pittsburgh beat Birmingham 6-3. Jim Rice had a big 3-run home run, and Neil Robinson had 2 RBI. Rickey Henderson had 3 hits, and Spoony Palm and Bill Monroe contributed with 2 hits each. Carlton Fisk had a 2-run home run for Birmingham, and Larry Brown added 2 hits.

St. Louis shut out New York 4-0. Pedro Martinez was dominant once again, going the distance while giving up only 3 hits. He had 11 strikeouts. Bernardo Baro had 2 hits and an RBI to back Martinez, and Oscar Charleston and Frank Warfield also added RBIs. Willie Wells and Jimmie Lyons had hits for New York. Sandy Koufax went the distance to take the loss.

Kansas City demolished Washington 13-4. Buck Leonard went 4-5 with 2 doubles, a triple, and 3 RBI. Tris Speaker, Mike Schmidt, and George Davis also had multiple RBI days. Old Hoss Rathburn improved his record to 4-1. Hank Aaron homered for Washington, and Ray Dandridge had 3 hits. Cy Young couldn’t get out of the 2nd inning, and his record dropped to 6-3.

Today’s Player Focus post is on Buck Leonard, thought by many to be the greatest first baseman who played in the Negro Leagues.

Eddie Plank(1-1) contributed a very nice performance in relief. He allowed only 1 hit and 1 walk in 2 and 1/3 innings. Pittsburgh had 12 hits for the game and Birmingham had 7.
The loss was charged to Gaylord Perry(1-6). He allowed 9 hits and 1 walk in 6 and 1/3 innings.

Bernardo Baro had 2 base hits and Pedro Martinez was on top of his game, blanking New York on just 3 hits as the St. Louis Stars bested the New York Black Yankees 4 to 0 at the ballpark.
Martinez(8-1) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the New York batters. He didn’t allow much, just 3 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. Martinez whiffed an impressive total of 11 New York batters seeing his ERA drop from 2.45 to 2.16. St. Louis totaled 7 hits on the afternoon.
Sandy Koufax(3-5) took the loss. ‘He came out with good stuff,’ St. Louis’ manager said about Martinez. ‘He threw the ball good from the first pitch on.’

Buck Leonard had 4 hits and 3 RBI at Griffith Stadium where the Kansas City Monarchs beat the Washington Homestead Grays by the score of 13 to 4.
Leonard enjoyed a fine day at the plate. He doubled which was good for two runs in the 1st inning, ripped a one-base hit in the 2nd inning, doubled in the 5th inning and tripled plating a run in the 9th inning. For the game Kansas City out-hit Washington 19 to 8.
Old Hoss Radbourn(4-1) allowed 4 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the victory. The losing pitcher was Cy Young(6-3). He surrendered 8 runs and 9 hits in 1 and 2/3 innings.
