Day 39

Newark dominated New York, 12-1. Warren Spahn pitched a complete game for the win. Buck Ewing had 3 hits and 3 RBI, Sammy T. Hughes had a home run and 4 RBI, and John Beckwith and Jerry Benjamin each added 2 hits for Newark. There were not many bright spots for New York, but Hack Wilson led the game off with a home run, and Jimmie Lyons had a 4-hit game.

Old Hoss Radbourn and Kansas City dominated Pittsburgh, 8-0. Radbourn pitched a complete game shutout and got support from Fats Jenkins (3 hits including a home run), Dave Malarcher (2 RBI), Tris Speaker and Mike Schmidt (2 hits each). Rev Cannady and Bill Monroe managed to each get 2 hits for Pittsburgh.

Pedro Martinez shined once again, as St. Louis beat Detroit, 6-1. Martinez went the distance, allowing only 1 run while striking out 11, dropping his ERA to 2.04. Bernardo Baro drove in 2 runs, Frank Warfield had 2 hits, and Joe Cronin had 3 hits and an RBI. The powerful Detroit lineup was stymied. George Brett drove in Sam Bankhead in the 5th inning for their only run. Besides Brett’s 2 hits, Yogi Berra added 2 and Bankhead and Willie Mays each added a hit.

Birmingham beat Washington, 6-2. Ron Santo drove in all 6 runs with a 3-hit performance. Cristobal Torriente had 2 hits and scored twice. Gaylord Perry picked up only his second win of the season. Al Simmons homered for the Grays, Hughie Jennings had 2 hits, and Frank Duncan added a hit. Cy Young went the distance to take the loss.

Today’s Player Focus post is on Jimmie Lyons, a slap-hitting outfielder who was one of the fastest men to ever play in the Negro Leagues.
