Day 40

Newark rallied from a 2-run deficit to beat New York, 4-3. Willie Powell picked up the win in relief. Joe Morgan drove in the game winning run in the bottom of the 8th. Morgan had 2 RBI in the game, and Pop Lloyd also had an RBI. Bullet Joe Rogan left the game with the lead, but New York could not hang on. Charles Blackwell (3 hits) and Jud Wilson (2 hits) each homered for New York.

Pittsburgh edged Kansas City in 10 innings, 5-4. Jackie Robinson (4 walks) led off the 10th with a walk. After stealing second, Robinson scored on a Frog Redus single to win the game. Slim Jones went the distance to pick up his 4th win. Dobie Moore drove in 2 runs for Pittsburgh. Tris Speaker had 3 hits, a home run, and 4 RBI for Kansas City. Buck Leonard and Fats Jenkins each had a hit for Kansas City.

St. Louis won a pitchers duel over Detroit, 1-0. Leon Day pitched 8-2/3 scoreless innings for the win, and Dennis Eckersley picked up the save. Hilton Smith was the hard-luck loser, going the distance and giving up a single run in the 4th inning. Roy Campanella drove home Willard Brown after he tripled. Oscar Johnson added a hit for St. Louis. Wild Bill Wright and Vic Harris had 2 of Detroit’s 5 hits.

Home Run Johnson (2 hits, 1 home run, 3 RBI) carried Washington to a 4-1 win over Birmingham. Andy Cooper picked up his 4th win, giving up 1 run over 7-1/3 innings. Hoyt Wilhelm picked up the save. Roberto Alomar had 2 hits and drove in the other run, and Red Parnell and Chino Smith each added a hit. Martin Dihigo and Cristobal Torriente each had 2 hits for Birmingham.

Today’s Player Focus post is on Leon Day, one of the greatest pitchers in the Negro Leagues and an outstanding all-around athlete.

Joe Morgan had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Newark Eagles bested the New York Black Yankees 4 to 3 at the ballpark.
The game was won by Newark when they scored a run in the 8th inning. Bill Perkins ripped a single. One out later, Jelly Gardner was a strikeout victim, unable to help out. Buck Ewing then was walked intentionally. Morgan was up next and he laced a base-hit scoring the run. New York tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.
Willie Powell(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 innings. Goose Gossage gained credit for his 12th save. Red Faber(1-2) took the loss in relief.
‘We didn’t get the key hits when we needed them’ New York’s manager said. ‘We did what we could, we just didn’t pull out the win. What can you say?’

Slim Jones pitched a complete game at Greenlee Field as the Pittsburgh Crawfords beat the Kansas City Monarchs in 10 innings by the count of 5 to 4.
The score was knotted at 4 after nine innings. Pittsburgh came out the victor in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Jackie Robinson drew a walk. Robinson stole second with some aggressive base running. After another out, Frog Redus then slapped a one-base hit giving Pittsburgh the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. Both teams finished the game with 10 hits.
The winning pitcher was Jones(4-4) who allowed 4 runs for the game. Lee Smith(0-4) was charged with the loss in relief.
‘I had a little blister on my index finger before the game, but I thought it was nothing.’ Jones said. ‘I was lucky I got a win because I couldn’t put the ball where I wanted it.’

Leon Day(5-3) and Hilton Smith(5-2) dueled it out with Day and the St. Louis Stars coming out on top of the Detroit Stars by the score of 1 to 0.
St. Louis scored what proved to be the only run of the contest in the bottom of the 4th inning. Detroit threatened in the 9th but St. Louis was able to put down the rally.
Day got help from Dennis Eckersley who was credited with his 5th save.

Shortstop Home Run Johnson lofted one into the ‘cheap seats’ and had 3 RBI at Griffith Stadium as the Washington Homestead Grays beat the Birmingham Black Barons 4 to 1.
Andy Cooper(4-3) delivered a fine performance for Washington. He surrendered 8 hits and 3 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings seeing his ERA drop from 5.12 to 4.68. Birmingham could do no damage in the 9th.
Hoyt Wilhelm got the save, his 7th. The losing pitcher was Harry Salmon(2-5). He surrendered 4 runs and 9 hits in 8 innings.
