Day 41

Week 11 ushers in some changes to starting pitching. Today Tom Seaver, Rube Waddell, and Addie Joss replaced Bob Feller, Christy Matthewson, and Robin Roberts.

Detroit clubbed Birmingham, 13-5. Cool Papa Bell homered and had 4 RBI and Alex Radcliffe had 3 hits and scored 4 runs for Detroit. Birmingham’s Amos Rusie could not get out of the second inning, giving up 6 runs in 1-1/3 innings. Stan Musial had 3 hits and 2 RBI, Larry Doby had 2 hits and 2 RBI, and Candy Jim Taylor has 2 hits in the loss.

New York beat Kansas City in a pitchers duel, 3-1. Ed Walsh went 7 scoreless innings and Rollie Fingers picked up a 2-inning save. Bonnie Serrel led the way at the plate with 2 hits, an RBI, and a run scored. Chuck Klein also homered for New York. Tom Seaver was the hard luck loser in his starting debut, going the distance in the loss. Ted Williams had 2 hits including a solo home run, and Tubby Scales also had 2 hits for Kansas City.

Greg Maddux led Pittsburgh to a 3-1 win over Newark and Walter Johnson. Rev Cannady’s 2-run blast in the 4th inning was the big blow. Pittsburgh only yielded 4 hits to Newark, including a double by Ernie Banks and a single by John Beckwith. Goose Goslin homered for Newark’s only run.

Rube Waddell made the most of his first start, allowing only 2 hits and 1 run in St. Louis’s 5-1 win over Washington. St. Louis used 2 unearned runs to help score 5 runs in the last 2 innings. Oscar Charleston had 3 hits and 2 RBI for St. Louis, and Judy Johnson and Frank Warfield each added 2 hits. Addie Joss took the loss in his first start for Washington. Willie Stargell’s solo home run accounted for Washington’s only run. Spot Poles had their only other hit.

Pete Alexander was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game as the Detroit Stars topped the Birmingham Black Barons by a score of 13 to 5 at Mack Park.
Detroit brought 6 runs across the plate in the bottom of the 2nd inning. That was all the offense they were to need. Detroit finished with 13 hits in the victory.
The win was credited to Alexander(8-2) who went the whole way allowing 5 runs. Amos Rusie(3-4) absorbed the loss. He gave up 6 runs and 2 hits in 1 and 1/3 innings.

At the ballpark, the New York fans witnessed a great pitcher’s duel. Ed Walsh(6-3) finally bested his Kansas City opposite, Tom Seaver(0-1), by the score of 3 to 1.
Walsh pitched a fine game. He allowed 6 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings lowering his ERA from 2.89 to 2.63. New York finished with just 6 hits in the victory.
Walsh was helped out by Rollie Fingers who recorded his 11th save. Seaver was the loser. He pitched 8 innings and surrendered 6 hits and 2 walks.

Greg Maddux(7-3) and Walter Johnson(4-7) dueled it out with Maddux and the Pittsburgh Crawfords coming out on top of the Newark Eagles by the score of 3 to 1.
Pittsburgh had 2 runs cross the plate in the 4th inning. After an out was recorded, Robin Yount began the Pittsburgh spurt when he laced a base-hit. Rev Cannady followed next and he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run. Neither team managed to score after the 4th inning.
Maddux got relief help from John Smoltz who gained credit for his 7th save.

Rube Waddell hurled a 2 hitter as the St. Louis Stars outscored the Washington Homestead Grays 5 to 1.

St. Louis continued their winnings ways improving their record to a league leading 27-14. They are 8-2 in their last ten games. With the loss, the Washington ballclub’s record is 19-22.
