Note: I mistakenly played these games with both “A teams” for the second game in a row. So, the final two games will be played by the “B teams”.

Today features the starting pitcher debuts by Tom Williams, Chet Brewer, Roosevelt Davis, and Nip Winters.

Birmingham beat Detroit 10-2, spoiling the debut of Tom Williams. Smokey Joe Williams went the distance for his 5th win. His lone blemish was a 2-run home run by Willie McCovey. Birmingham’s bats were hot, with home runs from Josh Gibson, Barry Larkin, and Stan Musial. Larry Doby had a huge day, with 3 hits and only a home run short of the cycle. Candy Jim Taylor also added 2 hits. Cool Papa Bell, Biz Mackey, Alex Radcliffe, and Double Duty Radcliffe all had hits for Detroit. Detroit also turned a triple play in the third inning.

Kansas City edged New York 7-6 in 10 innings. Alejandro Oms followed Larry Mize’s triple with a sacrifice fly to drive in the eventual game-winning run. Frank Thomas and Ted Williams each homered for Kansas City, and Tubby Scales had a 2-hit game. Bonnie Serrell had 2 RBI and Nate Joseph had 2 hits and an RBI in the loss.

Newark beat Pittsburgh 7-4, giving Big Bill Foster his 8th win of the season. Ernie Banks had a big day with 3 hits, a home run, and 2 RBI. Sammy T. Hughes had a 4-4 day. For Pittsburgh, Neil Robinson and Mel Ott each had 2 hits and a home run, and Spoony Palm also had 2 hits.

The debut of Nip Winters was a winning one, as St. Louis beat Washington, 7-1. Winters went 7-1/3 innings, giving up 6 hits and 1 run. Oscar Charleston had a big game, going 3-5 with a triple and 2 RBI. Judy Johnson and Lou Gehrig each had 2 hits and 2 RBI. T.J. Young added 3 hits. Bingo Demoss and Turkey Stearnes each had a hit for Washington.

Today’s Player Focus post is on Larry Doby, the first man to go directly from the Negro Leagues to the Major Leagues when he broke the color barrier in the American League.

Smokey Joe Williams delivered 9 solid innings and first baseman Stan Musial went deep and had 4 RBI as the Birmingham Black Barons beat the Detroit Stars by a score of 10 to 2.
Birmingham came up with 3 runs in the 2nd inning with the help of 4 hits. Josh Gibson led off and started the rally when he slapped a single. Barry Larkin followed and he blasted a two-run home run. Larry Doby then doubled. Candy Jim Taylor followed next and he delivered a one-base hit scoring the final run of the inning. That scoring would be all that was needed. Offensively, Birmingham was a juggernaut. They scored in 6 separate innings.
Williams(5-3) got the victory, allowing 2 runs for the game. Tom Williams(0-1) was given the loss. He was touched for 10 hits and 3 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.
‘Our guys just weren’t seeing the ball today.’ Detroit’s manager said. ‘Williams simply dominated us.’

First baseman Frank Thomas lofted one into the ‘cheap seats’ and had 2 RBI at the ballpark as the Kansas City Monarchs beat the New York Black Yankees in 10 innings 7 to 6.
Both teams were tied at 6 runs apiece after nine innings. Kansas City came out the victor in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Johnny Mize tripled. Alejandro Oms stepped up next and he hit a deep fly scoring the run. This was a game of many highs and lows for the home town fans, as the lead kept changing – 5 times in all.
The victory went to Lee Smith(1-4) who went 2 and 2/3 innings, allowing no runs. Stan Coveleski(2-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. He surrendered 3 runs in 4 innings and saw his ERA increase from 2.25 to 3.00.

The Newark Eagles put 4 runs on the scoreboard in the 2nd inning and bested the Pittsburgh Crawfords by a 7 to 4 score at Greenlee Field.
Newark scored 4 runs in the 2nd inning when they came up with 4 base hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Big Bill Foster(8-3) and Newark. That was all the run support Foster required. For the game Newark out-hit Pittsburgh 14 to 7.
Foster was helped out by Goose Gossage who recorded his 13th save. The losing pitcher was Roosevelt Davis(2-2). He surrendered 14 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings.

Oscar Charleston had 3 base hits and 2 RBI and Nip Winters carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning as the St. Louis Stars defeated the Washington Homestead Grays by a score of 7 to 1 at Griffith Stadium.
Winters(3-0) gave St. Louis a solid outing. He went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 6 hits and 2 walks improving his ERA from 4.15 to 2.31. The left-handed Winters lost a no-hitter when Bingo Demoss singled with one out in the 6th inning. St. Louis ended up with 13 hits for the game while Washington had 6.
The loss was charged to Ray Brown(2-6). He pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up 3 hits and 2 walks.
