April 23- Day 9

Today the third series of the season began. This week’s match ups are Washington at Birmingham, St. Louis at Detroit, Pittsburgh at Kansas City, and last place Newark at first place New York. (Newark really needs to make up some ground soon.)
Washington beat Birmingham 3-2 in 14 innings. Bingo Demoss had a key hit in the rally that gave the Grays the victory.
Detroit beat St. Louis 6-4. Cool Papa Bell led off with a home run off of Christy Matthewson, and all scoring ended by the bottom of the 5th.
Kansas City rallied from a 3-run deficit in the bottom of the 8th to take a 6-5 win in 10 innings. Spoony Palm’s homered in the loss. More on Spoony in a moment.
New York improved to 7-2 with a 4-1 victory over Newark. Newark is stuck with only 1 win. Pete Hill went hitless, but managed to drive in 2 runs with a walk and a hit by pitch.

Hughie Jennings had 3 base hits and Hoyt Wilhelm pitched 5 strong innings at the ballpark as the Washington Homestead Grays beat the Birmingham Black Barons in 14 innings 3 to 2.
The score was knotted at 2 after nine innings. Finally, Washington prevailed in the 14th inning. Frank Duncan reached on an error. Bingo Demoss next to the plate and he lined a one-base hit. Jennings then stroked a base-hit scoring the run. Washington finished with 11 hits while Birmingham ended up with 8.
The win was credited to Hal Newhouser(1-0) who went 2/3 of an inning allowing no runs. Addie Joss gained credit for his 2nd save. The loss was charged to Vic Willis(1-1) in relief. He was a hard-luck loser, pitching 2 and 2/3 innings and not allowing an earned run.

In a tight game it was the Detroit Stars 6, the St. Louis Stars 4 at Mack Park.
Pete Alexander(2-1) was solid if not spectacular. He went 7 innings and surrended up 8 hits and 5 walks. Both teams ended up with 9 hits on the afternoon.
Bruce Sutter preserved the game for Alexander, recording his his 3rd save. Christy Mathewson(0-3) was the loser. He served up 3 gopher balls in 7 innings.
‘I struggled a bit out there today,’ Alexander said, ‘but I toughed it out and we got the win.’

Bob Feller pitched a complete game at Muehlebach Field where the Kansas City Monarchs beat the Pittsburgh Crawfords in 10 innings 6 to 5.
Both teams were tied at 5 runs apiece after nine innings. Kansas City won it in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Frank Thomas hit a single. Ted Williams stepped up to the plate and he ripped a one-base hit. Johnny Mize then stroked a base-hit resulting in an exciting win for Kansas City and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. Although they lost, Pittsburgh did out-hit Kansas City 14 to 10.
The win went to Feller(1-1) who allowed 5 runs in the game. Eppa Rixey(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. ‘I was a little good, a little bad and a little ugly.’ said Feller, ‘I was just giving us a chance to win.’

Left fielder Joe Kelley had 3 base hits as the New York Black Yankees defeated the reeling Newark Eagles 4 to 1 at the ballpark.
New York came up with 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning when they came up with 3 base hits. The biggest moment was provided by Eddie Murray who brought the crowd to their feet when he doubled scoring two baserunners. New York had 9 hits overall, while Newark had 6.
The victory was credited to Ed Walsh(2-0) who went 8 innings, allowing 1 run. Rollie Fingers earned his 4th save. Walter Johnson(1-2) was given the loss. He pitched 8 innings giving up 9 hits and 4 walks.
