April 25 – Day 11

In game 3 of the 4-game sets, the road team B lineup was matched up with the home team A lineup. No extra inning games, but all 4 games were exciting.
Washington beat Birmingham 4-3 thanks to a 2-run home run in the 7th inning from Grant “Home Run” Johnson. The Black Barons loaded the bases with 2 outs in the 9th, but Barry Larkin could not deliver.
The magic ran out for Pedro Martinez, as St. Louis fell 9-7 to Detroit and Juan Marichal. Cool Papa Bell had a triple for St. Louis, and Biz Mackey went 3-5 with 2 RBI.
Kansas City beat Pittsburgh 2-1 on a 2-run 7th inning rally. Quincy Trouppe tripled home the eventual game winning run.
New York beat Newark 6-5. Newark took a 5-3 lead with a 3-run top of the 8th, only to give up 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th. Louis Santop hit his second home run of the season for New York, and Ty Cobb hit an inside-the-park home run for Newark.

One run was the difference at the ballpark as the Washington Homestead Grays defeated the Birmingham Black Barons 4 to 3.
Washington came up with 2 runs in the 7th inning with the help of 3 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Home Run Johnson who deflated the spirits of the home town crowd when he cracked a two-run shot. Birmingham threatened in the 9th but Washington was able to put down the rally.
Cy Young(3-0) got the win allowing 3 runs in 8 and 2/3 innings. Young got relief help from Hoyt Wilhelm who gained credit for his 3rd save. Ted Trent(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. He was hit hard and gave up 5 hits and 3 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.

Willie McCovey homered and had 4 RBI at Mack Park where the Detroit Stars beat the St. Louis Stars by the score of 9 to 7.
The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance provided by McCovey. He laced a base-knock in the 2nd inning, doubled plating a run in the 3rd inning and belted a three-run homer in the 7th inning. Detroit had 9 hits for the afternoon.
Juan Marichal(2-1) was the winner allowing 7 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings. Marichal got help from Bruce Sutter who earned his 4th save. Pedro Martinez(2-1) was charged with the loss. He served up 3 gopher balls in 6 innings.

48,628 fans were treated to a fine game at Muehlebach Field as only one run separated the combatants at game’s end. The Kansas City Monarchs won by the slimmest of margins, 2 to 1.
Kansas City scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning when they had 3 base hits. It was enough to earn the victory. Neither team was able to score until the 6th inning.
The victory went to Kid Nichols(2-0) who went 1 and 2/3 innings, allowing no runs. Nichols got help from Lee Smith who was credited with his 2nd save. Eddie Plank(0-1) took the loss in relief.

The New York Black Yankees and the Newark Eagles locked up in an exciting one-run game at the ballpark. The final score was the New York Black Yankees 6, the Newark Eagles 5.
New York came through with the game-winning runs in the 8th inning plating 3 runs on 4 base hits. Jud Wilson led off and got things going when he stroked a one-base hit. Honus Wagner came next and he slapped a base-hit. Joe Kelley then lined a single to load the bases. After an out was recorded, Harry Heilmann came to bat and drew a walk scoring a run. Eddie Murray came
up to bat and doubled driving home another two teammates. Newark made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
Rollie Fingers(1-1) picked up the victory, allowing 3 runs in 2 innings. Goose Gossage(0-1) was the loser in relief. He gave up 4 hits and 2 walks in 1 inning.
Newark’s manager was subdued when questioned after the game, ‘Sure, this kind of loss takes a while to get over, but heck, we’re all professionals. We’ve been through this many times – it’s the nature of the game. We’ll be fine – as for me – I’ll be ready to go again tomorrow!’
