William Bell Sr. was a clutch pitcher with an outstanding arsenal of fastball, curve, change up, and slider. He was one of the top right-handed pitchers of the 1920s.

Bell’s career spanned from 1923-1937, and the teams he played with included the Kansas City Monarchs, Homestead Grays, Pittsburgh Crawfords, and Newark Eagles, whom he managed in 1936-7. He also managed the Eagles in 1948.

He led the Kansas City Monarchs to the World Series in 1924 and 1925. In 1924 he went 10-2 in the regular season and started 3 games in the series with an ERA of 2.63. He won his only decision, and the Monarchs beat Hilldale 5 games to 4. In 1925 he went 9-3 in the regular season and put up a 1.13 ERA in 3 appearances in the series, which the Monarchs lost 5 games to 1 in a rematch with Hilldale.

A pitcher’s pitcher, he was an excellent teacher and had a positive influence on young pitchers.
