Day 16 – May 3

St. Louis beat Birmingham 6-5, overcoming a 5-1 deficit by scoring 3 runs in the top of the 9th. Tank Carr drove home the first run of the 9th, and scored the eventual winning run on a bases loaded single by Joe DiMaggio. Willard Brown homered in the loss for Birmingham. St, Louis took 3 of the 4 games in this series.

Detroit beat Washington 6-2. The Stars scored 4 runs in the second and never looked back. Kirby Puckett went 4-4, missing a cycle by a double. Hilton Smith went the distance for the win. Mule Suttles went 1-4, dropping his batting average to a staggering .531. Home Run Johnson hit a 2-run homer in the loss. Detroit took 3 of the 4 games.

Newark completed a 4-game sweep of Kansas City, 5-3. Newark scored all of their runs in the top of the fourth inning. William Bell picked up his second win. Pop Lloyd had 3 hits and an RBI, and corner outfielders Bill Perkins and Jelly Gardner combined for 4 hits. Dave Malarcher went 2-3 for Kansas City, raising his season average to .462.

Pittsburgh salvaged a 2-2 series split with New York with a 6-4 win, thanks to a 2-run rally in the top of the 9th inning. Ben Taylor started the rally with a single. Jimmie Crutchfield sacrificed him to second, and then Jackie Robinson was hit by a pitch. Earl Averill’s single drove home Taylor, and a Frog Redus sacrifice fly scored Robinson. Rogers Hornsby went 3-5 with 3 RBI, finishing a double short of a cycle. New York had tied the game with a 3-run rally in the bottom of the 7th, including an RBI single from Bruce Petway. Slim Jones had a fine start for the Crawfords, only giving up 1 run in the first 6 innings. He was responsible for 2 of the runners that scored in the 7th inning rally.

Today’s Player Focus post is on Stuart “Slim” Jones, a 6’6″ left-handed pitcher who put together a dominant 1934 season and had legendary battles with Satchel Paige. He died tragically at the age of 25.

In a great finish the St. Louis Stars came back in the top of the ninth and held on to win over the Birmingham Black Barons by a score of 6 to 5 at the ballpark.
St. Louis erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning scoring 3 runs on 4 hits. After an out was recorded, Home Run Baker opened up the rally as he laced a single. Dick Lundy struck out, unable to help the rally. Eddie Collins then banged out a single. Tank Carr was up next and he singled resulting in a run. Oscar Heavy Johnson stepped into the box and drew a walk to load the bases. Joe Dimaggio added his contribution to the rally and laced a base-knock which was good for two more runs. Dennis Eckersley earned the save with a perfect ninth, his 2nd save.
John Clarkson(2-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 3 and 1/3 innings. Dan Quisenberry(1-1) absorbed the loss in relief. St. Louis’ manager was feeling mighty fine as he answered questions in his office after the game, ‘Now that was one fine ending! Did you see how the crowd just sat there in silence after the winning run scored? Here we are celebrating wildly, and the stadium is cloaked in virtual silence. Weird. but GREAT!’

Hilton Smith tossed a complete game and Kirby Puckett had 4 hits and 3 RBI as the Detroit Stars defeated the Washington Homestead Grays 6 to 2 at Mack Park.
Puckett provided much of the offense. He tripled scoring a run in the 2nd inning, smashed a two-run homer in the 4th inning, stroked a base-hit in the 6th inning and slapped a single in the 8th inning. Detroit managed 14 hits in their victory.
Smith(2-1) allowed 2 runs on the game. Andy Cooper(1-2) was given the loss. He surrendered 4 runs and 4 hits in 1 and 2/3 innings.

In a close game it was the Newark Eagles 5, the Kansas City Monarchs 3 at Muehlebach Field.
William Bell(2-2) had a fairly solid outing. He allowed 8 hits and 6 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings seeing his ERA drop from 3.80 to 3.48. Newark finished with 13 hits while Kansas City ended up with 10.
Bell got help from Goose Gossage who earned his 4th save. Bill Drake(0-2) ended up with the loss. He was a hard-luck loser, pitching 4 innings and not allowing an earned run.
‘He gutted it out’ Newark’s manager said of Bell. ‘I was very impressed by his tenacity.’

Rogers Hornsby lofted one into the ‘cheap seats’ and had 3 RBI as the Pittsburgh Crawfords bested the New York Black Yankees 6 to 4 at the ballpark.
Pittsburgh scored the winning runs in the 9th inning scoring 2 runs using 2 hits. Ben Taylor opened up the inning nicely when he stroked a single. Jimmie Crutchfield was next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Jackie Robinson then was hit by a pitch. Earl Averill followed next and he hit a single, and an error was also committed, scoring a single run. Frog Redus stepped into the box and hit a sacrifice fly scoring the final run of the inning. Pittsburgh had 10 hits for the game and New York had 6.
The win was credited to Frank Wickware(1-0) who went 2 innings allowing 1 run. Wickware was helped out by John Smoltz who recorded his 4th save. Bullet Joe Rogan(2-2) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 9 innings allowing 10 hits and 4 walks.
Pittsburgh now has a record of 8-8. New York has a record of 10-6 after the loss.
