Week 4 Wrap Up

All standings and statistics can be found on this web page, created with Strat-O-Matic’s Web Builder: Standings and Statistics Web Page

This week St. Louis took 3 of 4 at Birmingham, Washington took 1 of 4 at Detroit, Newark swept 4 at Kansas City, and Pittsburgh split a series at New York.

Standings

One anomaly in the schedule so far – St. Louis and Washington have only played on the road, and Birmingham and Detroit have only played home games. This would seem to give St. Louis an edge going forward. Overall, road teams are 35-29 to date.

Run Differential

St. Louis leads the way with +19, or 1.2 runs per game. Kansas City is -27.

Individual Pitching

Cy Young (Washington) is the only pitcher with a 4-0 record. Christy Matthewson (St. Louis) is the only pitcher with an 0-4 record.
Rollie Fingers has saved 5 games for New York, while blowing 2 saves. Dan Quisenberry (Birmingham) and Lee Smith (Kansas City) have both blown 3 saves.
Ed Walsh (New York) still leads the way in ERA at 1.15, and his teammate Satchel Paige (1.63) combines to give the team quite a 1-2 punch.
Pedro Martinez (St. Louis) leads the league with 43 strike outs, with a K/9 innings of 12.1. He is 16 strikeouts ahead of second place Sandy Koufax.
One more note about Pedro Martinez, he currently has the two best game scores: 91 and 86.

Individual Batting

Ralph Kiner (Detroit) still is leading the way in HR and RBI. If you look at the leaders, notice that they all play for Detroit. I wonder if that will change when the Detroit Stars finally start playing road games. Mule Suttles (Detroit) is close to the triple crown, 2nd in HR & RBI and leading with a batting average of .531.

Strat-O-Matic does not provide leaders in batting average and related statistics because no player qualifies with 3.1 plate appearances per team game. (This is because these players only play every other game.) Here are the leaders in batting average, which I put together with the Strat-O-Matic Report Builder. Mule Suttles (Detroit) and Josh Gibson (Birmingham) lead the way with averages of at least .500.
