Jelly Gardner was a speedy leadoff hitter who was a great defensive outfielder with a good arm and outstanding range.

“He could steal first base.”

Cum Posey

Gardner’s career spanned from 1919-1933. He played primarily with the Chicago American Giants, but also played for the Detroit Stars, New York Lincoln Giants, and Homestead Grays. Besides the outfield, he also played some first base. In his 11 years with the American Giants they won 4 pennants and a World Series (1926).

He struggled during his early career, but began to blossom in 1923 when he finally hit over .300 (.302). In 1926 he batted .376, and hit .300 in the playoffs in the American Giants World Series championship season. Dave Malarcher was the manager that season, and he soon struggled to handle Gardner.

Gardner had a reputation for being a fighter and a man who loved to drink and enjoy the nightlife. He once kicked Frank Duncan in the mouth after Duncan had been knocked unconscious by a policeman trying to break up a fight with the Kansas City Monarchs. However, he seems to be a constant source for writers trying to learn about Negro League players of the past, so he must have been approachable.
