Day 18 – May 8

Two shutouts and one blowout today on Day 18.

Newark returned the favor, blanking Detroit 5-0. Big Bill Foster pitched 7-1/3 shutout innings to pick up his third win of the season, and Jelly Gardner had 3 hits. Cool Papa Bell had 3 hits for Detroit in the loss.

Pittsburgh outslugged Birmingham 14-9. Roosevelt Davis picked up the win in relief, and Lefty Grove picked up a 4-inning save with scoreless relief. Rogers Hornsby went 5-5, and Jimmie Crutchfield drove in 4 runs. Babe Ruth also went 5-5 for Birmingham, and both Ruth and Josh Gibson homered for the second game in a row.

Satchel Paige through a complete game shutout to lead New York over St. Louis, 4-0. Pete Hill and Bonnie Serrell each had 2 hits in the victory, and Oscar Heavy Johnson had 2 hits for St. Louis. The Yankees extended their lead to 2 games over St. Louis.

Kansas City only had 6 hits, but they made them count in a 6-3 victory over Washington. Frank Thomas hit a grand slam in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach, and Ted Williams went 2-4 with an RBI. Home Run Johnson went 2-3 with an RBI in the loss, and Buck O’Neil chipped in with an RBI as well.

Today’s Player Focus post is on outfielder Jelly Gardner, a speedy outfielder and classic leadoff man.

Brooks Robinson touched them all and had 2 RBI as the Newark Eagles topped the Detroit Stars by a score of 5 to 0 at the ballpark.
Big Bill Foster(3-2) pitched a fine game. He allowed 7 hits and 4 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings dropping his ERA from 4.18 to 3.19. Newark managed 9 hits in their victory.
Foster got help from Goose Gossage who earned his 5th save. Dick Redding(2-2) suffered the loss. He surrendered 9 hits and 4 walks in 8 innings.

Mickey Cochrane had 4 hits and 3 RBI as the Pittsburgh Crawfords defeated the Birmingham Black Barons 14 to 9 at Greenlee Field.
Pittsburgh had 5 runs cross the plate in the 5th inning when they came up with 6 base hits. The biggest moment was provided by Jimmie Crutchfield who brought the crowd to their feet when he laced a base-hit which was good for two runs. A wild and woolly affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times.
Roosevelt Davis(2-1) went 1 inning allowing 1 run for the victory. Davis got relief help from Lefty Grove who gained credit for his 1st save. Rube Currie(0-1) was charged with the loss in relief.

Pete Hill had 2 base hits and Satchel Paige recorded a complete game shutout at the ballpark as the New York Black Yankees beat the St. Louis Stars by the count of 4 to 0.
Paige(2-1) delivered a fine performance for New York. He surrendered 7 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 1.63 to 1.23. New York finished with 12 hits in the victory.
Bill Holland(2-2) was tagged with the loss. He pitched 7 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 11 hits and no walks. Wth the win New York now has a record of a league leading 12-6. With this loss, St. Louis has a 5-5 record of late, 10-8 overall.

In a game at Griffith Stadium the Kansas City Monarchs finally stopped their 6 slide with the victory and got by the Washington Homestead Grays by the score of 6 to 3.
Max Manning(2-0) was solid if not spectacular. He surrendered 9 hits and 2 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings lowering his ERA to 4.08. Washington had 12 hits in the game while Kansas City had 6, but Kansas City had the more timely hits.
Manning got help from Dazzy Vance who was credited with his 1st save. The loss was charged to Ray Brown(1-3). He gave up 4 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.
‘Wow. That’s about all I can think to say.’ said Kansas City’s manager following the victory. ‘If ever a team needed a win, it was us.’
