Chet Brewer had it all as a pitcher: finesse, control, power, multiple pitches, an emery ball, and a great memory.

“He had three speeds: Fast, faster, and out of sight! He threw a pea, an aspirin, and one with a tail on it!”

Semi-pro catcher Al McKerlie

His career spanned 1925-1948, playing with the Kansas City Monarchs, Brooklyn Royal Giants, New York Cubans, Philadelphia Stars, Cleveland Buckeyes, and Chicago American Giants, among other teams. He pitched in organized baseball in 1952, including a stint with Visalia in the California League. His record was 127-79 in the Negro Leagues. He also played around the world in Canada, China, Haiti, Hawaii, Japan, Mexico, the Phillipines, and Santo Domingo.

He helped pitch the Kansas City Monarchs (along with Bullet Rogan) into the 1926 playoffs. He also won pennants with the Monarchs in 1940, and with the Cleveland Buckeyes in 1947. He made multiple all star teams.

In 1930 he had a famous 12-inning pitcher’s duel with Smokey Joe Williams. Brewer struck out 19 batters, including one stretch of 10 in a row, giving up 4 hits. Williams outdid him 27 strike outs (only 9 non-strike out outs!) and only 1 hit to win 1-0.
