Day 21 – May 14

The sixth set of 4-game series starts today, with Detroit, New York and St. Louis, tied for first place.

Kansas City jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Tubby Scales solo homer, but fell to Newark 3-1. Sammy T. Hughes scored a run, and Newark picked up solo homers from Hank Greenberg and Reggie Jackson. Bob Feller struck out 13 in a complete game loss, and Goose Gossage struck out the side to pick up his 6th save.

Pete Hill homered, stole a base, and had 2 RBI for New York, and Chuck Klein went 3-5 with a homer and 4 RBI. Chet Brewer picked up a rare 6-inning save. Spoony Palm had 2 hits in the loss and Rev Cannady added an RBI.

Birmingham jumped out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Josh Gibson, but fell 6-1 to St. Louis. (Catch the theme? This is the third team to open a first inning lead only to lose!) Oscar Charleston hit a 2-run home run, his third on the season. Frank Warfield added a 2-run triple. Christy Matthewson went the distance to pick up his first win. The dynamic duo of Babe Ruth and Josh Gibson were held to a 1-8 day for Birmigham. Candy Jim Taylor and Dick Seay each chipped in with a hit in the loss.

Detroit scored early and often in a 9-0 blanking of Washington. Al Kaline went 5-5 with a home run and 2 RBI, finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Cool Papa Bell had 3 hits, and Dewey Creacy hit his first home run of the season. Pete Alexander struck out 12 in his complete game shutout. Frank Duncan had 2 of Washington’s 6 hits.

Today’s Player Focus post is on pitcher Chet Brewer, a well-traveled pitcher who played with the Kansas City Monarchs. His 1930 pitcher’s duel with Smokey Joe Williams (46 combined strike outs in 12 innings) was a Negro Leagues classic!
