Day 22 – May 15

Newark beat Kansas City 8-2, thanks to an outburst of 7 runs in the first 2 innings. Big Bill Foster picked up his 4th win with a complete game. Dave Winfield led the way with 3 hits and 5 RBI. Ty Cobb had 3 hits and Bill Perkins added 2 hits and 2 RBI. Frank Thomas’s home run in the first inning accounted for all of Kansas City’s scoring. Quincy Trouppe singled and scored on that home run.

Pittsburgh bested New York by a score of 10-6. Satchel Paige could not hold an early 4-run lead, and Bill Byrd picked up the win. Paul Molitor led the way with 3 hits, a home run, and 4 RBI. Dobie Moore singled home 2 runs, and Ben Taylor had 2 triples in the victory. Newt Joseph had a 3-run double and scored on an error in the second inning of the loss.

St. Louis edged Birmingham 4-3. Smokey Joe Williams had a shutout going into the 9th inning, but gave up 4 unearned runs to take the hard luck loss. Tank Carr delivered the fatal blow with a 2-run walk off triple. Roberto Clemente, Babe Ruth, and Josh Gibson each had 3 hits in the loss. Birmingham left 12 men on base.

The Washington Homestead Grays rode an 8-run 8th inning to beat Detroit 9-5. Wade Boggs hit a bases loaded double in the key inning. Chino Smith had 2 hits and 2 RBI, and Buck O’Neil added 2 hits. Cool Papa Bell and Biz Mackey each had 2 hits in the loss, and Ralph Kiner hit his league-leading 9th home run for Detroit.

Today’s Player Focus post is on Newt Joseph, a hard-playing third baseman for the Kansas City Monarchs. Newt was known for his ability to make plays on slow rollers and bunts, as well as for his aggressive base running.

Big Bill Foster completed the game without help from the bullpen as the Newark Eagles defeated the Kansas City Monarchs 8 to 2 at the ballpark.
Dave Winfield had a good day at the plate. He lined a base-hit scoring a run in the 1st inning, lofted a three-run bomb in the 2nd inning and slapped a single which plated a run in the 7th inning. Newark finished with 13 hits in the victory.
Foster(4-2), allowing 2 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Max Manning(2-1) suffered the loss. He allowed 6 hits and 2 walks in 1 and 2/3 innings.
The Newark ballclub’s record now stands at 10-12. Kansas City continued their losing ways and their record is now 7-15, worst in the league. They are 2-8 in their last ten games.

At Greenlee Field the Pittsburgh Crawfords outdistanced the New York Black Yankees by a final score of 10 to 6.
The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance provided by Paul Molitor. He laced a base-knock in the 3rd inning, launched a Grand Slam homerun in the 4th inning and smacked a single in the 7th inning. Pittsburgh had 11 hits for the afternoon.
The win went to Bill Byrd(2-2) who allowed 5 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings. Byrd got help from John Smoltz who earned his 5th save. Satchel Paige(2-2) absorbed the loss. He gave up 6 runs in 3 and 1/3 innings of work.
With the win Pittsburgh now has a record of 12-10. With the loss, the New York ballclub’s record is 13-9.

It was a great finish at the ballpark as the St. Louis Stars pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the Birmingham Black Barons by the count of 4 to 3.
St. Louis erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning when they came up with 4 runs on 4 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Tank Carr who made the St. Louis fans a happy lot when he tripled scoring two baserunners. St. Louis won despite being out-hit by Birmingham 13 hits to 8.
The win was credited to John Clarkson(3-0) who went 2 innings allowing 1 run. The losing pitcher was Smokey Joe Williams(1-3). It was a tough loss for him as he did not allow an earned run in his 8 and 2/3 innings of work.
‘Now that is what I call fun! I just love baseball, especially games like this, of course,’ St. Louis’ manager offered. ‘Everyone at the stadium had a great time – did you see the fans go wild there at the end?!’

The Washington Homestead Grays bested the Detroit Stars by a 9 to 5 score at Griffith Stadium.
Washington put a big number on the board in the 8th inning, which proved too much for Detroit to overcome as they showed no mercy on Detroit blasting them for 6 hits and plating 8 runs. The crucial at-bat was provided by Wade Boggs who electrified Griffith Stadium when he doubled plating three runs. Washington totaled 11 hits on the afternoon.
The victory was credited to Jim Bunning(1-0) who went 2 and 1/3 innings, allowing 3 runs. Bruce Sutter(1-1) was charged with the loss in relief.
