Day 24 – May 17

Week 6 wrapped up today.
Kansas City beat Newark 1-0. Bill Drake pitched 7-1/3 innings of shutout ball to out duel William Bell. Kansas City scored its only run in the 8th inning, as Buck Leonard’s sacrifice fly drove home Fats Jenkins. Newark only managed to get 4 hits, 2 of those by Jelly Gardner.

New York won another dramatic game at Pittsburgh, 7-5, thanks to a 4 run 9th inning. Bullet Rogan picked up the win. Eddie Matthews hit a 3-run home run off Eddie Plank to drive home Charles Blackwell and Willie Wells. Slim Jones was tagged with the loss, coming up 1 out short of the win. Ben Taylor and Jimmie Crutchfield each had an RBI for Pittsburgh. The loss dropped Pittsburgh 3 games behind New York in the standings.

Harry Salmon (7 IP, 1 run) pitched Birmingham to a 3-1 win over St. Louis. Salmon gave up an RBI double to Tank Carr in the first inning, then settled down. Dan Quisenberry picked up his first save. Newt Allen and Cristobal Torriente each had 2 hits in the win. Tank Carr provided all the offense for St. Louis, going 2-4 with an RBI. Leon Day pitched well in the loss.

Detroit edged Washington 6-5, scoring the decisive run in the top of the 9th on a Sam Bankhead sacrifice fly. Willie Mays homered and had 3 RBI, and Mule Suttles broke out of his slump with a single. Home Run Johnson and Red Parnell each had 2 hits for Washington, and Johnny Bench hit his second home run in the loss.

In a game for the baseball purist, Bill Drake(1-3) and William Bell(2-3) squared off in a tense pitching duel, Kansas City Monarchs finally emerged victorious over Newark Eagles, 1 to 0.
The game was won by Kansas City when they scored a run in the 8th inning. After an out was recorded, Fats Jenkins drew a walk. Charlie Gehringer followed next and he smacked a single. Buck Leonard then hit a deep fly scoring the run. Newark threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.
Lee Smith gained credit for his 5th save. ‘We didn’t get the key hits when we needed them’ Newark’s manager said. ‘We did what we could, we just didn’t pull out the win. What can you say?’

In a dramatic ending the New York Black Yankees staged a comeback and held on to win over the Pittsburgh Crawfords by the count of 7 to 5.
New York won the game with a rally in the 9th inning when they came up with 4 runs on 4 hits. The highlight belonged to Eddie Mathews who deflated the crowd as he belted a three-run homer. A wild affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times.
Bullet Joe Rogan(3-2) was the winner allowing 5 runs in 8 innings. Rollie Fingers recorded his 7th save. Slim Jones(2-2) was the loser. New York’s manager was feeling mighty fine as he answered questions in his office after the game, ‘Now that was one fine ending! Did you see how the crowd just sat there in silence after the winning run scored? Here we are celebrating wildly, and the stadium is cloaked in virtual silence. Weird. but GREAT!’

At the ballpark, the St. Louis faithful were treated to an intriguing pitcher’s duel. Harry Salmon(1-2) finally bested his St. Louis counterpart, Leon Day(3-1), by the score of 3 to 1.
Birmingham went ahead for good in the top of the 5th inning scoring one runner on 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Newt Allen slapped a single. Larry Brown followed and he doubled scoring the run. Birmingham and St. Louis each finished the afternoon with 7 hits.
Dan Quisenberry earned his 1st save. Day ended up with the loss. He gave up 3 runs and 7 hits in 9 innings.

47,146 fans were treated to a fine game at Griffith Stadium as only one run separated the combatants at game’s end. The Detroit Stars won by the slimmest of margins, 6 to 5.
Detroit scored the deciding run in the top of the 9th inning. Bobby Doerr drew a walk. Vic Harris next to the plate and he drew a walk. Kirby Puckett then laid down a sacrifice bunt. Sam Bankhead was up next and he hit a deep fly scoring the run. Bruce Sutter was great in relief and recorded his 5th save.
The victory went to Jack Chesbro(1-0) who went 3 and 2/3 innings, allowing no runs. John Donaldson(0-1) suffered the loss in relief. He was unable to retire a batter giving up no hits and 2 walks.
