Day 25 – May 21

Week 7 opened today with three 1-run games.
Detroit won at Birmingham, 5-4, thanks to a 4-run 8th inning. Biz Mackey had a key RBI double that got the rally started. Dewey Creacy added an RBI in the win and Cool Papa Bell had 2 hits, a walk, and 2 stolen bases. Barry Larkin went 3-3 with a walk in the loss, and Josh Gibson belted his 5th home run of the season. Dick Seay drove in a run as well.

Kansas City rode a 10 strikeout performance from Bob Feller to beat New York, 6-3. Johnny Mize hit his 4th homer for the victors, Ted Williams drove in 3 runs, and Tubby Scales scored twice. Louis Santop tripled in a run for New York, and Joe Kelley extended his hitting streak to 13 games.

Pittsburgh nipped Newark, 3-2, with Greg Maddux outdueling Walter Johnson. Pittsburgh scored twice in the second inning on a Rev Cannady single and Bill Monroe sacrifice fly, and never trailed from that point. John Beckwith and Jerry Benjamin drove home runs in defeat for Newark.

Washington came back from a 3-0 deficit to beat St. Louis 5-4 in 10 innings. St. Louis had back-to-back homers from Lou Gehrig, Oscar Charleston, and Frank Robinson in the first inning. Hank Aaron hit the winning home run for Washington in the top of the 10th, and Ray Dandridge chipped in with 3 hits. John Donaldson picked up his first win of the season with 3-2/3 innings of shutout relief. Frank Warfield drove in a run with a daring suicide squeeze that gave St. Louis a 4-3 lead, but Dennis Eckersley could not hold the lead.

The Detroit Stars and the Birmingham Black Barons locked up in an exciting one-run game at the ballpark. The final score was the Detroit Stars 5, the Birmingham Black Barons 4.
Detroit scored the decisive runs in a big 8th inning scoring 4 runners on 4 hits. Detroit finished with 9 hits in the victory.
The win went to Pete Alexander(6-1) who allowed 3 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings. Bruce Sutter gained credit for his 6th save. Vic Willis(1-2) suffered the loss in relief. He was touched for 5 hits and 2 walks in 2 innings.
The Detroit ballclub’s record now stands at 15-10. Birmingham continued their losing ways and their record is now 9-16. They are 2-8 in their last ten games.

Bob Feller racked up an impressive total of 10 strikeouts and Johnny Mize went yard and had 2 RBI at Muehlebach Field as the Kansas City Monarchs beat the New York Black Yankees 6 to 3.
Feller(2-4) pitched a solid game. He allowed 7 hits and 4 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings. Kansas City had 12 hits overall, while New York had 8.
Webster McDonald recorded the save, his 2nd. Ed Walsh(4-1) ended up with the loss. He saw his ERA jump from 2.47 to 2.81 as gave up 6 runs in 8 innings.
Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of Feller – except New York. New York’s manager lamented, ‘He just was ‘on’ this afternoon. He was keeping our guys off balance all game. A fine game by a good strikeout pitcher – makes it a fun game for the hometown fans – unfortunately we were the visitors!’

The Pittsburgh Crawfords nipped the Newark Eagles 3 to 2 at the ballpark in a hard fought contest.
In the top of the 2nd inning Pittsburgh scored 2 runs. Pittsburgh finished with just 6 hits in the victory. The victory was credited to Greg Maddux(3-3) who went 7 and 2/3 innings, allowing 1 run. Maddux got help from John Smoltz who earned his 6th save. The losing pitcher was Walter Johnson(3-4).

Hank Aaron connected with a ‘big fly’ and had 3 RBI as the Washington Homestead Grays defeated the St. Louis Stars in 10 innings 5 to 4 at the ballpark.
Both teams were tied at 4 runs apiece after nine innings. Washington won it in the 10th inning. Aaron hit a bases-empty home run. St. Louis was out-hit by Washington, 14 hits to 11.
The victory went to John Donaldson(1-1) who went 3 and 2/3 innings, allowing no runs. Dennis Eckersley(0-2) was tagged with the loss in relief. He surrendered 4 hits and 1 walk in 2 innings.
