Frank Warfield was an outstanding fielding second baseman whose range, hands, and unique snap throw made him an ideal double play partner. He was also a good contact hitter, adept at the hit-and-run and sacrifice bunting. He had great speed and was an excellent base runner.
“Frank Warfield was an aggressive, smart second baseman and a fair right-handed hitter.”
Robert Peterson, Only the Ball was White
Warfield was very competitive, and his sarcasm made him less than popular with teammates. Once, in Cuba, Warfield got into a fight with Oliver “Ghost” Marcelle that evolved from a dice game. In the melee, Warfield bit off part of Marcelle’s nose.
Warfield’s baseball intelligence allowed him to work his was up to player/manager. He skippered Hilldale to back-to-back pennants in 1924 and 1925, and they won the World Series in 1925. He also managed the Blatimore Black Sox to a pennant in 1929. (He also managed Santa Clara to a Cuban championship.)
Frank Warfield was managing the Washington Pilots when he died in 1932 from a heart attack under vague circumstances at the age of 37.
