Day 26 – May 22

One close game, followed by 3 blowouts today.
Detroit edged Birmingham, 2-1, in 11 innings. Dick Redding allowed 1 run in 7-2/3 innings for the winners, and Smokey Joe Williams did the same in 9-1/3 innings. The winning rally began with a triple by Double Duty Radcliffe. Cool Papa Bell walked, and then attempted to steal second base. Carlton Fisk’s throw sailed into center field, allowing Radcliffe to score. Bell was later caught trying to steal home. Newt Allen had 2 hits for Birmingham.

Kansas City beat New York, 14-4. After a strong beginning, Satchel Paige could not get out of the 4th inning, giving up 8 earned runs. Max Manning went the distance for Kansas City to pick up his third win. Fats Jenkins had 4 hits and 3 RBI for Kansas City, and Buck Leonard and Dave Malarcher adder 2 hits each. Louis Santop hit his 3rd home run of the season for the losers. New York’s Joe Kelley was held hitless, snapping his 13 game hitting streak.

Bill Foster was dominant, pitching a complete game 3-hit shutout to lead Newark over Pittsburgh, 6-0. Pop Lloyd had an RBI double and Ty Cobb had 2 hits and 2 RBI. Neil Robinson had one of Pittsburgh’s 3 hits, and Bill Byrd went the distance in defeat.

Washington crushed St. Louis 9-2, thanks to a 6 RBI performance from Hank Aaron. Aaron had 3 hits, including his 3rd home run on the season. Ray Brown threw a complete game to pick up the win. Turkey Stearnes added 2 RBI for Washington. Tank Carr singled in the loss, ending the day hitting .385. Eddie Collins doubled to stretch his hitting streak to 13 games.

Today’s Player Focus post is on Bill Foster, left handed pitcher who had one of the biggest clutch pitching performances to win the 1926 pennant. Bill Foster is the younger half-brother of Negro League pioneer Rube Foster.

The Detroit Stars nipped the Birmingham Black Barons in 11 innings 2 to 1 at the ballpark in a hard fought contest.
The score was tied at 1 after nine. Detroit came out the victor in the 11th inning. Double Duty Radcliffe tripled. Cool Papa Bell followed and he drew a walk. Detroit’s manager then called for a steal which was successful. Detroit had only 6 hits for the afternoon.
Phil Niekro(1-1) went 3 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Niekro got help from Don Drysdale who earned his 1st save. Vic Willis(1-3) suffered the loss in relief. He was a hard-luck loser, pitching 1 and 2/3 innings and not allowing an earned run.

Max Manning pitched a complete game and left fielder Fats Jenkins had 4 hits and 3 RBI at Muehlebach Field as the Kansas City Monarchs embarrassed the New York Black Yankees by the lopsided score of 14 to 4.
Kansas City brought 6 runs across the plate in the bottom of the 4th inning when they had 6 base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Jenkins who thrilled the crowd when he lashed a single plating two runs. Kansas City had 18 hits for the afternoon.
The victory went to Manning(3-1) who went the distance allowing 4 runs. Satchel Paige(2-3) was tagged with the loss. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 8 runs in 3 and 1/3 innings.

Ty Cobb had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Big Bill Foster held Pittsburgh scoreless on just 3 hits as the Newark Eagles topped the Pittsburgh Crawfords by a score of 6 to 0 at the ballpark.
Foster(5-2) simply dominated Pittsburgh. He didn’t allow much, just 3 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 2.93 to 2.39. Neither team managed to score after the 4th inning.
Bill Byrd(2-3) absorbed the loss. He allowed 10 hits and 2 walks in 8 innings.

Right fielder Hank Aaron connected with a ‘big fly’ and had 6 RBI and Ray Brown tossed a complete game at the ballpark where the Washington Homestead Grays beat the St. Louis Stars by the score of 9 to 2.
Aaron provided the offensive punch. He belted a three-run homer in the 5th inning, ripped a base-hit in the 7th inning and laced a one-base hit scoring two baserunners in the 8th inning. Washington managed 12 hits in their victory.
The win was credited to Brown(2-3) who went the whole way allowing 2 runs. Bill Holland(2-3) was hit with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 9 hits and 2 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.
