Bernardo Baro was a Cuban outfielder who played in the Negro Leagues and the Cuban League. The left-handed batter was a 5-tool player and a solid outfielder, although he sometimes showed off too much in the outfield. He was part of one of the greatest outfields in black baseball history, playing for the Cuban Stars with Alejandro Oms and Pablo Mesa.

“A left-handed batter, the veteran outfielder was a five-point player, a player who could run, field, throw, hit, hit with power.”

James A. Reilly

Bernardo Baro’s career spanned from 1913-1930. He played most of his career with the Cuban Stars – West and the Cuban Stars – East, and finished his career with a brief stint with the Kansas City Monarchs. His career average in the Negro Leagues was .302.

Baro was quick tempered, and after threatening a player with a bat he was hit by a fastball that broke his ankle. He suffered a compound fracture of his leg in 1924 chasing a foul ball into the stands. After surgery he played first base for two years.

After leaving the Kansas City Monarchs, he returned home to Cuba where he died suddenly in 1930.
