Day 27 – May 23

Detroit jumped out to a quick lead and held on to beat Birmingham, 5-2. It was the Mule Suttles show – he went 3-5 with 2 home runs and 3 RBI. Bobby Doerr drove in the other 2 Detroit runs. Josh Gibson had 2 hits in the loss, keeping his average at .500 for the season. Larry Doby and Chaney White also had hits for Birmingham.

Kansas City beat New York, 6-4. Johnny Mize’s 3-run home run in the 7th inning was the big blow. Ted Williams had 2 hits and an RBI, and Tubby Scales had 3 hits for Kansas City. Jud Wilson had 2 hits for New York, and Willie Wells added an RBI.

Newark edged Pittsburgh 6-5 on Reggie Jackson’s 9th inning bases-loaded single. Jackson had homered earlier and ended the day with 4 RBI. Hank Greenberg went 3-4 with a home run and 2 RBI, and Sammy T. Hughes added a hit. For Pittsburgh, Ben Taylor went 2-4 with a home run and 2 RBI.

Pedro Martinez and St. Louis won a highly anticipated match-up with Washington and Cy Young by a score of 5-1. Pedro threw a complete game 2-hitter, striking out 11. Frank Robinson and Carl Yastrzemski supported Martinez with 2 RBI each, and Bernardo Baro had 2 hits for St. Louis. Red Parnell gave Washington an early lead with his solo home run in the second inning, but a 2-run home run by Yaz in the bottom of the inning gave St. Louis the lead for good.

Today’s Player Focus post is on Bernardo Baro, Cuban-born outfielder who starred in the Negro Leagues and the Cuban League. He was a true 5-tool player.

Mule Suttles smacked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Detroit Stars defeated the Birmingham Black Barons 5 to 2 at the ballpark.
Suttles was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day at their team’s expense. He smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 2nd inning, doubled resulting in a run in the 3rd inning and hit a bases-empty home run in the 5th inning. Detroit ended up with 12 hits for the game while Birmingham had 9.
Juan Marichal(3-3) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 and 2/3 innings and allowing 2 runs. Marichal got relief help from Bruce Sutter who gained credit for his 7th save. Gaylord Perry(1-4) was given the loss. He was unable to control the Detroit offense and allowed 11 hits and 4 walks in 8 innings.

In a close game it was the Kansas City Monarchs 6, the New York Black Yankees 4 at Muehlebach Field.
Dazzy Vance(1-0) won the game with a masterful relief performance. No one got on base in his perfect 1/3 of an inning seeing his ERA drop from 3.00 to 2.70. Kansas City and New York each finished the afternoon with 9 hits.
Lee Smith got the save, his 6th. Sandy Koufax(2-4) absorbed the loss. He gave up 9 hits and 5 walks in 8 innings.

Newark Eagles broke the deadlock in their last at bats, pulling out a 6 to 5 win over the Pittsburgh Crawfords and sending their hometown fans home smiling.
The game was won by Newark with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. After two were out Hank Greenberg drew a walk. John Beckwith came next and he drew a walk. Ed Delahanty then drew a walk to load the bases. Reggie Jackson followed next and he stroked a single resulting in an exciting win for Newark and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. Newark won despite being out-hit by Pittsburgh 12 hits to 8.
The win was credited to Carl Hubbell(1-0) who went 1 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs. The losing pitcher was Lefty Grove(0-1) in relief.

WASHINGTON AT ST. LOUIS

Pedro Martinez allowed just 2 hits at the ballpark where the St. Louis Stars beat the Washington Homestead Grays by the score of 5 to 1.
In the bottom of the 2nd inning St. Louis went on top for good when they came up with 2 runs on 2 hits. That early run support was enough for Martinez(6-1) and St. Louis. After the 4th inning, neither team was able to score.
Cy Young(5-2) suffered the loss. He allowed 5 runs and 7 hits in 7 innings. ‘Martinez just dominated us’ losing pitcher Young said. ‘Hopefully we can get to him the next time around’
