Day 28 – May 24

Detroit beat Birmingham, 6-3. Detroit scored 5 runs in the third inning thanks to a grand slam by Yogi Berra. Mule Suttles had a big day at the plate, going 3-5 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI. Hilton Smith picked up his 3rd win, going 8 innings while giving up 3 runs. Hurley McNair had 2 hits in the loss.

New York beat Kansas City 6-4 in 10 innings. Bullet Joe Rogan pitched well enough to win on most days, going 8-2/3 innings while allowing 4 runs. Gabby Hartnett drove home the go ahead run with a triple, and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Jimmie Lyons. Charles Blackwell contributed with 2 hits for New York. Buck Leonard hit a big 3-run homer for Kansas City to tie the game in the 7th inning. It was his first of the season.

Newark easily handled Pittsburgh 7-4. William Bell picked up the win, going 8-2/3 innings with only 1 earned run allowed. Dave Winfield and Jelly Gardner each had 2 RBI for Newark. Frog Redus drove in a run for Pittsburgh.

Leon Day led St. Louis past Washington 4-3. Willard “Home Run” Brown, really was Ese Hombre, with a crucial 2-run homer. Oscar Heavy Johnson also homered for St. Louis, and Eddie Collins singled to run his hitting streak to 14 games. Chino Smith had an RBI for Washington, and Andy Cooper pitched well in the loss.

Today’s Player Focus post is on Willard Brown, a power hitting outfielder who went on to play in the American League and was inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

In a two run game the New York Black Yankees got by the Kansas City Monarchs in 10 innings by the score of 6 to 4.
The score was tied at 4 after nine. New York won the hard fought contest in the 10th inning. Eddie Mathews kicked off the action when he reached on an error. Gabby Hartnett followed next and he tripled scoring a run. One out later, Jimmie Lyons then hit a sacrifice fly scoring the final run of the inning. New York totaled 10 hits on the afternoon.
The win was credited to Stan Coveleski(2-0) who went 1 inning allowing no runs. Rollie Fingers was credited with his 8th save. Kid Nichols(2-2) ended up with the loss in relief. He was pinned with the loss despite not allowing an earned run in his 5 innings of work.
With this win, New York has a 16-12 record. They have been 4-6 lately. Kansas City has a record of 12-16 after the loss.
