Day 30 – May 29

Smokey Joe Williams and Birmingham dominated Kansas City 5-0. Williams struck out 10 batters – it wasn’t 27, like his legendary game, but still pretty impressive. Larry Brown hit a big 3-run homer, and Ron Santo adder a 2-run homer. Alejandro Oms had 2 hits in the loss.

Willie Mays 2-run home run in the 8th inning gave Detroit a 4-2 win over New York. Vic Harris added a solo homer, and Sam Bankhead had 3 hits. Dick Redding threw 6 solid innings for Detroit. Satchel Paige took the complete game loss, and Bonnie Serrell had an RBI in the loss.

Newark beat St. Louis 5-3, with Big Bill Foster picking up his 6th win. Superman Pennington had 3 hits and an RBI, and Pop Lloyd had 2 RBI. Judy Johnson hit his first home run in the defeat and had 2 RBI.

Pittsburgh won the day’s most exciting game, beating Washington 4-3 with a run in the bottom of the 9th. Hank Aaron singled home the tying run in the top of the 9th, but Jackie Robinson drove home Ben Taylor with the game-winner. Jimmie Crutchfield had 2 hits for Pittsburgh, and Rogers Hornsby homered. Turkey Stearnes and Bingo Demoss each had a hit for Washington.

Smokey Joe Williams mowed down 10 Kansas City batters at the ballpark where the Birmingham Black Barons beat the Kansas City Monarchs by the score of 5 to 0.
Williams(2-3) pitched a solid game. He allowed only 8 hits and 5 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings seeing his ERA drop from 2.70 to 2.34. Birmingham managed only 6 hits on the afternoon.
Dan Quisenberry gained credit for his 2nd save. The loss was charged to Max Manning(3-2). Williams was jubilant in the hometown clubhouse, ‘It was a lot of fun out there. The fans gave me a lot of support as did my teammates. We got the victory and I’ll sure take 10 strikeouts anytime!’

Sam Bankhead had 3 base hits at Mack Park as the smoking-hot Detroit Stars beat the New York Black Yankees 4 to 2.
Detroit erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 8th inning with 2 runs on 2 base hits. Bankhead started the inning off right when he ripped a base-hit. George Brett was a strikeout victim, unable to help out. Willie Mays then clubbed a two-run home run. Detroit ended up with 10 hits for the game while New York had 3.
The victory was credited to Jack Chesbro(2-0) who went 2 and 2/3 innings, allowing no runs. Chesbro got help from Bruce Sutter who earned his 9th save. Satchel Paige(2-4) was the loser. He gave up 10 hits and 2 walks in 8 innings.
No one has been able to stop Detroit lately as they lengthened their winning streak to 7 games.

Big Bill Foster had a strong outing at the ballpark where the Newark Eagles beat the St. Louis Stars 5 to 3.
St. Louis was unable to recover after Newark went ahead in the bottom of the 4th inning plating an isolated run on 2 hits. Goose Gossage was perfect in relief and got the save, his 8th.
Foster(6-2) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 8 innings. Bill Holland(2-4) took the loss. He got hammered, allowing 9 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings.

Pittsburgh Crawfords broke the deadlock in their last at bats, pulling out a 4 to 3 win over the Washington Homestead Grays and sending their hometown fans home smiling.
The game was won by Pittsburgh when they scored a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. Ben Taylor laced a one-base hit. Jimmie Crutchfield stepped into the batter’s box and he lined a single. Jackie Robinson then delivered a base-hit making Pittsburgh the victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration. Pittsburgh banged out 12 hits on the afternoon.
The winning pitcher was John Smoltz(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Addie Joss(1-1) was charged with the loss in relief. He surrendered 1 run and 4 hits in 1 inning.
