Day 31 – May 30

The road team won all 4 games today – so much for home field advantage!
Kansas City dominated Birmingham by a score of 7-2. Old Hoss Radburn went the distance to improve to 3-1. Mike Schmidt had a home run and 2 RBI, and Buck Leonard added 2 doubles and an RBI. Tris Speaker also added 2 hits and an RBI. Babe Ruth homered in the loss, and Josh Gibson added 2 hits.

Sandy Koufax was dominant with a 2-hit complete game shutout, lifting New York to a 6-0 win over first-place Detroit. Charlie Blackwell hit 2 home runs and had 3 RBI, and Jimmie Lyons and Hack Wilson each homered. Biz Mackey’s double and Dewey Creacy’s single were Detroit’s only 2 hits of the game.

Pedro Martinez struck out 14 hitters in St. Louis’s 4-3 victory over Newark. Martinez did not give up a hit until the 6th inning. Roy Campanella homered for the victors, and Tank Carr and Oscar Johnson each added a hit. Eddie Collins had 2 RBI and extended his hitting streak to 15 games. Hank Greenberg and Reggie Jackson had solo homers for Newark. Warren Spahn pitched well in the loss, giving up only 2 runs over 6-1/3 innings.

Washington destroyed Pittsburgh, 19-7. Chino Smith led the way, going 4-6 with a home run and 6 RBI. Home Run Johnson went 3-4 with 4 RBI and 2 walks. Buck O’Neil drove in a run as well. Neil Robinson had a good day for Pittsburgh, with 2 hits, 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored. Mel Ott and Jimmie Foxx each homered in defeat.

Today’s Player Focus post is on Charlie Blackwell, a contact hitting outfielder with power and speed. Known to be extremely hard to strike out.

Radbourn(3-1) put on a good performance. He didn’t give up much, just 5 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 4.36 to 3.96. Kansas City dominated offensively as they scored in 6 different innings.
Gaylord Perry(1-5) was the loser. He allowed 11 hits and no walks in 9 innings.

Right fielder Charles Blackwell knocked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Sandy Koufax pitched a 2 hit shutout as the New York Black Yankees defeated the Detroit Stars 6 to 0 at Mack Park.
Blackwell was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided much of the offense for the visitors. He blasted a two-run home run in the 7th inning and blasted a solo shot in the 9th inning. New York totaled 12 hits on the afternoon.
Koufax(3-4) went the distance for the shutout. Juan Marichal(3-4) was tagged with the loss. He served up 3 homeruns in his 7 innings.
New York now has a record of 17-14. With the loss, Detroit has a record of 7-3 lately, 20-11 overall.

Pedro Martinez didn’t allow a hit until the 6th inning as the St. Louis Stars defeated the Newark Eagles by the score of 4 to 3 at the ballpark.
Martinez(7-1) pitched a solid game. He allowed only 3 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings. Martinez racked up 14 strikeouts and served up 2 ‘big flies’. The right-handed Martinez lost a no-hitter when Goose Goslin singled with nobody out in the 6th inning. Newark had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.
Martinez got help from Dennis Eckersley who earned his 3rd save. Warren Spahn(1-4) was hit with the loss. He surrendered 5 hits and 2 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.
Martinez was asked about his big strikeout performance, ‘Well, it’s a little odd when you rack up these numbers on the road – instead of cheers and a running tally in the stands, everything gets real still and quiet. Just strange – but it’s nice to be able to take the crowd out of the game.’

Right fielder Chino Smith had 4 hits and 6 RBI as the Washington Homestead Grays ballclub embarrassed the Pittsburgh Crawfords by the count of 19 to 7.
Smith was a one-man wrecking crew. He ripped a base-hit in the 1st inning, doubled which scored a run in the 3rd inning, launched a three-run homer in the 5th inning and doubled which was good for two runs in the 8th inning. Washington lit up the scoreboard in the 3rd inning which saw them score 4 runs on 3 hits and the 5th inning with 9 runs on 7 hits. Washington had many opportunities throughout the game and scored in 6 separate innings.
The win went to Cy Young(6-2) who allowed 7 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings. Young got help from Burleigh Grimes who was credited with his 1st save. Jim Palmer(2-3) ended up with the loss. He was knocked around by Washington, allowing 10 hits and 4 walks in 4 innings.
