Day 32 – May 31

Harry Salmon pitched a complete game, leading Birmingham over Kansas City by a score of 8-1. Birmingham opened the scoring with 5 runs in the bottom of the 4th and coasted from there. Martin Dihigo had a 2-run double and scored twice, and Cristobal Torriente hit his first home run of the season for Birmingham. Tris Speaker’s sole homer accounted for all of Kansas City’s scoring. Dave Malarcher went 1-4, dropping his average to a still respectable .360.

After being shutout yesterday, the Detroit offense woke up and exploded for 11 runs in an 11-4 win over New York. Hilton Smith went the distance for Detroit, raising his record to 4-1. Wild Bill Wright went 4-5 with an RBI and Mule Suttles went 2-4 with 2 RBI for Detroit. Yogi Berra also added on a 3-run home run. Charlie Blackwell had 2 hits for New York, and Bruce Petway had 3 hits. The Black Yankees got home runs from Eddie Matthews and Ryne Sandberg.

Newark won a pitcher’s duel over St. Louis 1-0. William Bell threw a complete game 3-hitter to win for Newark. Leon Day took the loss, allowing only 5 hits and 1 run in his complete game effort. Newark scored their run in the bottom of the 4th when Dave Winfield singled home Pop Lloyd from second base. Newark’s corner outfielders, Bill Perkins and Jelly Gardner, each had a hit in the game. Joe DiMaggio had 2 of St. Louis’s 3 hits. Eddie Collins had his 15-game hitting streak snapped, going 0-3 with a sacrifice.

Washington held off Pittsburgh, 3-2. Andy Cooper picked up the win with 8 solid innings. Buck O’Neil tripled in a run, Chino Smith had an RBI double, and Red Parnell hit a sacrifice fly for Washington. In the bottom of the 9th, Jimmie Crutchfield singled in a run to get Pittsburgh within 1 run, but Spoony Palm grounded out with runners on 2nd and 3rd to end the game..

Detroit took the lead for good in the 2nd inning scoring a single run using 2 hits. Detroit managed 18 hits in their victory.

William Bell was on top of his game, blanking St. Louis on just 3 hits as the Newark Eagles outscored the St. Louis Stars 1 to 0.
Bell(4-3) was in control of the game from the outset. He allowed only 3 hits and 5 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 2.45 to 2.11. Newark finished with just 5 hits in the victory.
The losing pitcher was Leon Day(4-2). He gave up just 1 run and 5 hits in 8 innings. Newark now has a record of 15-17. St. Louis has a record of 19-13 after the loss.

One run was the difference at Greenlee Field as the Washington Homestead Grays defeated the Pittsburgh Crawfords 3 to 2.
Pittsburgh was unable to claim the lead after Washington went ahead in the top of the 3rd inning plating one baserunner on 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Home Run Johnson doubled. Buck O’Neil next to the plate and he tripled scoring the run. Pittsburgh had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.
Andy Cooper(3-3) allowed 1 run in 8 innings, and picked up the victory. Hoyt Wilhelm earned his 5th save. Slim Jones(2-4) ended up with the loss. He allowed just 3 runs and 5 hits in 9 innings.
With this win, Washington has a 16-16 record. They have been 5-5 lately. With the loss Pittsburgh now has a record of 15-17.
