Day 37

Week 10 of the Buck O’Neil Project got under way today.
New York beat Newark, 4-2. Chuck Klein went 3-5 and scored 2 runs. Louis Santop added 2 hits for New York. Ed Walsh won his 5th game of the season, and Walter Johnson dropped to 4-6 with a complete game loss. John Beckwith homered for Newark, and Ernie Banks doubled in a run for Newark.

Pittsburgh crushed Kansas City 11-4. Neil Robinson had 2 hits and an RBI for Pittsburgh. Rev Cannady added 2 RBI, and Rickey Henderson had 3 hits. Jim Rice reached base 5 times – 3 BBs. 1 HPB, and 1 single. For Kansas City, Billy Williams had a 2-run homer and Quincy Trouppe scored 2 runs.

In an exciting game, St. Louis beat Detroit 4-3. Vic Harris had a 2-run double to give Detroit a 3-2 lead in the top of the 9th. Frank Robinson answered by driving in Tank Carr and Oscar Charleston in the bottom of the 9th with a triple to give St. Louis the victory. Robinson, Charleston, and Frank Warfield each had 2 hits for St. Louis. Dewey Creacy had 2 hits for Detroit.

Washington edged Birmingham 5-4 in 10 innings. Turkey Stearnes’s sacrifice fly drove home Spot Poles with the winning run. Willie Stargell had 3 RBI in the win, including a 2-run double in the bottom of the 9th that tied the game. Candy Jim Taylor had 2 hits and an RBI in the loss.

Rollie Fingers recorded the save, his 10th. Walter Johnson(4-6) was given the loss. Wth the win New York now has a record of 19-18. With the loss, Newark has a record of 5-5 lately, 17-20 overall.

Rickey Henderson had 3 base hits at Greenlee Field where the Pittsburgh Crawfords beat the Kansas City Monarchs 11 to 4.
Greg Maddux(6-3) contributed a pedestrian performance to earn the win. He allowed 8 hits and 5 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings. Maddux racked up 9 strikeouts. Pittsburgh banged out 11 hits on the afternoon.
Maddux got help from Lefty Grove who was credited with his 2nd save. Bob Feller(3-6) ended up with the loss. He gave up 8 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings of work.

Right fielder Frank Robinson had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at the ballpark as the St. Louis Stars won in dramatic fashion coming back to beat the Detroit Stars by the count of 4 to 3.
St. Louis scored the winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning scoring 2 runs on 2 hits. After two were out Lou Gehrig began the St. Louis spurt when he ripped a base-knock. Oscar Charleston came to the plate and drew a walk. Robinson then tripled giving St. Louis the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. St. Louis had a total of 7 hits for the game.
The win went to John Clarkson(4-0) who allowed no runs in 1/3 of an inning. Bruce Sutter(1-2) was tagged with the loss in relief. He allowed 2 runs and 2 hits in 2/3 of an inning.

32,964 fans were treated to a fine game at Griffith Stadium as only one run separated the combatants at game’s end. The Washington Homestead Grays won by the slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.
Both teams were tied at 4 runs apiece after nine innings. Washington came out on top in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Spot Poles slapped a base-hit. Poles then stole second base. Al Simmons then delivered a single. Turkey Stearnes was up next and he hit a sacrifice fly resulting in a mighty exciting win for Washington and the 32,964 home town fans in attendance. Washington finished with 8 hits in the victory.
The win was credited to Al Spalding(1-1) who went 3 innings allowing no runs. Dan Quisenberry(1-3) suffered the loss in relief. He surrendered 2 hits and 1 walk in 1 and 1/3 innings.
