Day 38

Newark beat New York 4-1 behind a solid pitching performance from Big Bill Foster. Foster improved to 7-3 by allowing 1 run over 7 innings. Ty Cobb went 2-3 to improve to .359 on the season, and Pop Lloyd added a hit. Satchel Paige took the complete-game loss. Chuck Klein had 2 doubles in the loss, and Louis Santop added a hit.

Kansas City beat Pittsburgh 9-5. Alejandro Oms had a huge game, going 3-5 with a home run and 2 RBI. Ted Williams and Billy Williams both had home runs for Kansas City. Frog Redus and Dobie Moore each had 2 hits for Pittsburgh.

St. Louis took over first place by beating Detroit 8-6, thanks to a 6-run 8th inning rally. Tank Carr went 2-4 with 2 RBI and Oscar Johnson went 2-4 with 1 RBI. Joe DiMaggio added a home run for St. Louis. Biz Mackey had a big day for Detroit, going 3-5 with 4 RBI. Alex Radcliffe also had 3 hits for Detroit.

Birmingham crushed Washington 8-0. Smokey Joe Williams was dominant, throwing a 3-hit complete-game shutout to drop his ERA to 1.84 on the season. Babe Ruth went 3-5 with a home run and 3 RBI. Roberto Clemente led the game off with a home run for the 3rd time in the last 2 weeks, and reached base 5 times (4-4, 1 walk). Chaney White also had 3 hits for Birmingham. Wade Boggs (2 hits) and Chino Smith had the only hits for Washington.

In a close game it was the St. Louis Stars 8, the Detroit Stars 6 at the ballpark.
Nip Winters(2-0) was reasonably effective in relief and got credit with the victory. He went 2 and 1/3 innings and surrended up 3 hits and 2 walks. Detroit made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
Winters was helped out by Dennis Eckersley who recorded his 4th save. Jack Chesbro(2-1) was hit with the loss in relief. His ERA ballooned from 3.48 to 7.36 as he allowed 5 runs in 2/3 of an inning.
