Day 33

Newark beat Detroit 4-1. Newark scored 4 early runs and rode an outstanding effort by Walter Johnson to win. John Beckwith had a 2-run home run for Newark, and Ernie Banks added an RBI. Alex Radcliffe homered for Detroit’s only run. Pete Alexander went the distance, picking up only his second loss against 7 wins.

Pittsburgh routed Birmingham 8-3. Mel Ott homered and had 4 RBI, and Rev Cannady added 3 hits for Pittsburgh. Roberto Clemente had a lead off home run for Birmingham, and Josh Gibson had 2 hits in the loss.

Christy Matthewson dominated with a 2-hit complete game shutout, as St. Louis beat New York 2-0. Carl Yastrzemski provided all of the offense with a 2-run homer in the second inning. Oscar Charleston added a double. Louis Santop and Bonnie Serrell had New York’s only hits.

Washington scored 5 early runs, and held on for a 5-4 win over Kansas City. Ray Dandridge had 2 hits for Washington, and Hughie Jennings had 2 RBI. Alejandro Oms provided all of the offense for Kansas City with a 3-run home run in the 7th inning and a solo blast in the 9th.

Walter Johnson carried a no-hitter into the 8th inning and Goose Goslin had 2 base hits at the ballpark where the Newark Eagles beat the Detroit Stars by the score of 4 to 1.
Johnson(4-5) put on a good performance. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 2 hits and 3 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings lowering his ERA to 3.03. The right-handed Johnson lost his no-hit bid when Alec Radcliff homered with one out in the 8th inning. Detroit went down without a fight in the 9th.
Goose Gossage was credited with his 9th save. Pete Alexander(7-2) was tagged with the loss. He gave up only 6 hits and no walks in 8 innings.

At Greenlee Field the Birmingham Black Barons were battered 8 to 3 by the Pittsburgh Crawfords.
Greg Maddux(5-3) pitched well for Pittsburgh in their victory. He went 7 innings and surrended up 8 hits and 2 walks. Pittsburgh out-hit Birmingham for the game, 11 hits to 8.
Amos Rusie(3-3) suffered the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 8 hits and 6 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.

Christy Mathewson pitched a 2 hit shutout as the St. Louis Stars bested the New York Black Yankees 2 to 0 at the ballpark.
Mathewson(3-4) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the New York batters. He gave up just 2 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 3.72 to 3.20. The pitchers took over after the 2nd inning as neither team was able to score again.
Ed Walsh(4-3) absorbed the loss. He gave up 2 runs and 3 hits in 8 innings.

Robin Roberts(1-5) earned his pay with a solid performance for Washington. He surrendered 6 hits and no walks in 6 and 1/3 innings. Kansas City tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.
Hoyt Wilhelm earned his 6th save. The loss was charged to Bob Feller(3-5). He pitched 6 innings giving up 11 hits and 1 walk.
