Carr began his career in the California Winter League, which was an integrated league. In the CWL he hit .317 against major-league pitchers. He started to play in the Negro Leagues with the Kansas City Monarchs in 1920. In his three years with the Monarchs he hit .336, .330, and .303. He moved to Hilldale in 1923 and struggled in his first season. He had a great season in 1925, leading the ECL (Eastern Colored League) in doubles, triples, and stolen bases while hitting .358. He batted .320 in the World Series that year, as his team beat the Monarchs.
